Great Post, but the former employee part does not always work.

For instance, someone reached out to me through LinkedIn to ask about a particular place I worked, with a view to knowing certain things. I gave her a general answer of "It is like any other entity with its peculiarities".

Meanwhile, I won't recommend that place for anyone. However, I bet you don't expect me to start raising the issue of toxic environment and others with a stranger who is looking at working there.

former employees won't tell you the truth they will tell you the company is OK until you get there and confirm yourself

Another thing to look out for is if the company has advertised that your particular role numerous times in the past.

If yes, It means the staff attrition rate is high. Na something dey pursue all of them from there. So, don't be too fast to do THANKSGIVING at your church.

Do your research well before jumping from frying pan to fire.

you think if a stranger calls me out of the blue to ask questions about my former employer, i will answer him? especially as a nigerian? when i dont know if it is really some sort of scammer or something more sinister?

wrong. i know of a company with a very very shitty working environment which did not feature here in any way

the gossip in the industry does not reach nairaland. maybe the nairaland of 10 years ago - but nairaland of today is not really a place where people talk career stuff
