A few hours ago, the members of the nigerian senate sat and passed a resolution to extend the collection of old naira notes by the Central Bank. The end date for the collection of old naira notes by banks had originally been set for the 31st of January 2023. But as the deadline draws near, the new naira notes seem not readily available, even as politicians are busy trying all they can to get access to large amounts of the new notes for election rigging purposes.
Atiku, the presidential candidate for the PDP has also come out with an emotional appeal to the Cental Bank governor to extend the deadline, citing the concern for suffering nigerians as a reason. It is of note that his VP, Okowa had earlier today recieved the go ahead from the delta state house of assembly to borrow trillions of naira, even while currently indebted and owing civil servants in the state.

It remains to be seen whether this resolution by the senate will sway the CBN governor, Emefiele and his boss, Buhari into doing what the politicians want.

First of, the senate has gone on recess since Thursday or thereabouts.

Second, the senate has no powers or whatsoever, to extend any deadline set by the CBN.

Stop misinforming the public.

I believe its a legitimate concern, if the rural cant access bank for transfer we will see a lot of people all of a sudden be dropped into poverty.

I understand the new naira policy was created to curb corruption and vote buying but its a move that can have unwanted side effects.
no be today Nigeria people began to suffer. If this new policy will make sure we elect the best hands for the job,the suffering is warranted.

I know first hand what this policy can do and how it affected businesses but it's all for greater good

I dont know why people see this people as people who really want to fight corruption, this bastard have no plan for the common man, all thier policies only affect the common man,

How cud u think that the politician will lack this new naira note while they romote and control all this bank managers.

By next week old note will bcome useless eye go open, no new note to do anything u want to do, especially motorist like in lagos, when u will be struggling to enter bus is that when u want to do transfer.

They’re all citing "the suffering of the masses" as an excuse to shift the deadline for new Naira notes till after the elections, but don’t remember the suffering of the same masses as a result of acute fuel shortages since last year! Rubber stamp assembly. grin

I don’t understand this your rubber stamp tag. They’re going against the presidency here. I heard Buhari is siding with the CBN and their Jan 31st deadline. What makes them rubber stamp here if their doing the bidding of the masses?

I spent almost an hour before I could pay for fuel yesterday, POS’ at the station was down, cash was no where. Reporting from Abuja

How much is POS that every okra, biscuit, nylon or sachet water hawkers will be able to afford?

Una dey vex person angry

No amount of extension will placate Nigerians! They will still wait till last minute!

Foolish Nigerians are busy paying 20 to 25% extra charge just to collect #5000 new note from POS operators. Money that they will still spend buying breakfast and other stuff in one day! Then return to pay another 20%! Keep encouraging black market for new notes!

Why do you want to hold on to cash so much? People should force themselves to go cashless! I've been doing transfers of #500 and #1000 since Friday, world did not end. Will be transferring 5k to the shop near me today, so that I can pick what I want without bothering myself about cash.

The people doing cashless in the pictures below are not aliens, they are your local day-to-day vendors!

Rural areas are regarded as abodes of superstition, poverty, lethargy, low income and low productivity. No one is dropping into poverty there, they’re already poor! The stockpiling of cash is not a practice of rural dwellers either, but the political class in the urban centers who are crying now because they’re the ones mostly affected by the policy. The pros far outweigh the cons if it’ll at the very least help to ensure credible elections in the coming polls.

You sat down in your room and decided who it affects the most, lol.
How many rural dwellers have you talked to for you decide that it doesn't affect them as much as it affects the politicians?
A politician who stole 2 billion naira and managed to swap 1 billion naira versus a villager who worked hard for his 20,000 naira but couldn't get it swap. Use your common sense to analyse this scenario now!
It is not the quantity but the effects on individual

Stop complaining for everything! Everyone will adapt! If pure water hawkers can't get POS, they can simply download, register and receive payment on bank apps like OPAY, palmpay, cowry etc. OPAY app is quite effective for microtransactions. Any serious business, small or large, will adapt to the current realities!

Below is a screenshot for payment to Fura di Nono hawkers (source: Twitter) ! Dey play, you hear!

If you're scared of transfer, feel free to pay premium of 25% for new notes that you will still spend in 24 hours! What's my own! cool cool cool

Banks were still giving out old notes till about 5 days ago. So, if you had returned your old notes to the banks, you would have still come home with old notes.
As I'm typing this, I just replied my driver to collect old notes when he called me to ask. Do you see enough new notes in circulation?

They won't allow us to rest with the people in the rural area. Most of them have sorted their way out. Plenty of them is also being guarded by their people in the urban areas. #100 note is still there to be used.
We know it is not gonna be easy but it's what it's
