The new CBN naira redesign and the scarcity of the new notes seem to be a strategy against vote buying.
However, politicians can still have their way and get some cash to throw around. Although, they cannot get enough of it this time.

Vote buying cannot guarantee victory for the following reasons:

Interestingly, presidential election is big and cannot be compared to State elections. Voting will take place simultaneously in 774 LGAs of the federation. Consequently, it is difficult to provide all the logistics that will mobilise cash to all polling units on election day.

Recall that Goodluck Ebele Jonathan lost election as an incumbent president. He had all the state resources available at his disposal, yet he lost the election. If vote buying is all that it takes, he would have won easily.

Additionally, Nigerians are wiser now. If they don't want you, they will collect your money and still vote against you. It is a secret ballot.

Collect your money and still vote the right candidate. It's your money and not theirs.

So Buhari won in 2019 by buying votes?
I voted in 2019 and nobody was paying shi shi for votes.

To downplayed the significance of vote buying in Nigeria election most especially this period of harsh economic reality is self deception and delusion.

It's when you get to the rural areas that you'll understand the disposition of those people. They live on immediate benefit so the highest bidder will always get their vote.

Bros, nobody is downplaying vote buying. I am only saying that you cannot win a presidential election by vote buying.
How many people can you buy?
I have like 17 LGAs in my state alone. My LGA has about 20 communities. Each community has about 10 polling units.
In my community, you can get at least 50k votes.
So, if you intend to buy votes with 5k for each voter, you need at least 20 million Naira to get 40k votes.
That is about 200 million in one LGA and at least 3.4 billion in my State.

Now imagine a state like Kano, Lagos and Rivers?

The painful thing is that even if you can afford the money, many people will collect the money and yet will not vote for you.

An average Northerner only votes a politician that is recommended by mallam. Even if you break world Bank, they will collect your money and vote their preferred candidate.

Kai .... I understand all these you've said even though most of your assertion are impractical.

Politicians buy votes in localities they considered to be weak, and not all polling units.

The rural voters which are mostly illiterates does not reason the way those in the city centers reason. If you give them money and you tell them that this is our direction they'll as a matter of principle and fear abide by it. This is why politicians avoid vote buying in the city centers cos they know the game.

Do not forget that vote buying can be done indirectly too or by proxy. The mallam you talk about in the north can be bought to canvas voters.

Summarily politicians don't need to buy votes in all the polling units. They do that in their weak locations.

You are right. However, people seem to be more aware of the consequences of their actions today.
Rural dwellers are becoming wise.
People gave really suffered.
They now educate voters in the church and mosque.
Many Rural dwellers are now aware that the reason they are suffering is because of the wrong candidate they chose in 2015 and 2019 just for a little money.
Do you think, they will repeat the same mistake?

Please note that Goodluck Jonathan didn't lose presidential election because his vote buying could make him win.

He lost that election because of conspiracy, betrayal and sabotage by his trusted men.

Imagine campaign funds released to Kwankwanwo for kano state, he hoarded all funds because he wanted his brother buhari to win. Recall Kano is where Buhari got 1.9m votes. Similar things happened in other nothern states

However, I blame the passive, dull and weak Goodluck for his own failure.
