what could be the possible cause(s) and solution(s) to this:

you try to play a 3D car-race game on your pc and the screen goes blank and then comes up with an "Out of Range" message when you restart and anytime you turn on your system after that occurrence. . . . .

I guess you have this problem with a particular game? Which one?

Now, monitors have ranges of frequencies and resolutions that they operate within. For some, these ranges can be altered while others, old monitors cant have theirs altered.

What I can tell that the game you are trying to play has its minimum screen resolution(confirm this from the vendors/game site), which your monitor obviously does not support, but your VGA cards does!. If the VGA does not support that mode, it would auto-revert to the base resolution( usually 640x480).

You might be running your system normally on 640x480 @ 60Hz, and the game want to switch to 85Hz in a bid to provide a better frame rate.
If your monitor cant display at this range, you get the out of range message.

Options:
1. Look for a way to change the settings in the game, sometimes you can change a configuration file in the game folder to have it boot up at another resolution. If you don't find a configuration file then hook up another monitor just so you can get the game running, and then set it to default into a range your previous monitor can run. There should be an "in-game" option for this.

2. , ? Before I start yapping here, I did not even ask, Is it a VGA or a DVI? Let me know then I can proceed.
