A Teaching Job In Benin Or A Microfinance Bank Job In Lagos? by ewa20buredi100: 4:22pm On Feb 17, 2023
I have a neighbour who resides in Benin city, works as a Physics teacher in a private school and earns 60k as salary, plus extra 55k as a private lesson tutor.

She was recently given a job offer, after applying, in one Microfinance bank in Trade fair, Lagos state. The Microfinance bank has its headquarter in Europe.
The pay is 76k for the first 6 months. After which there will be an upward review to 96k.

Problem is she doesn't know which one to choose, as she is tired of teaching and life in Benin. And wants to experience Lagos life.

I wanted to tell her of the life, stress and traffic in Lagos. But had to withdraw, because I haven't been in Lagos for years now. So chances are that i may tell her what is not true.

And secondly, she has no accommodation in Lagos, but wants to go stay with a friend.

I do not know what to tell her.

Your suggestion highly needed.

Thank you.

She should stay in Benin because all her salary will be used to pay expenses except if they get free accommodation but hope she is not going to work as a marketer

I don't agree with you. Teaching in Nigeria is about the worst profession anyone can go into.
The pay is very poor; the experience cannot be used to get any other job outside teaching in another Private secondary School. In private schools, you'd hardly have time for any other thing because you're always overloaded with work.
So you lose on all fronts: no money, no useful experience, no mobility and the society doesn't even regard you!

As a private school teacher in Lagos I don't know of Benin, I prefer a stable bank salary job to a teaching job.
Don't forget that lesson is more about when school is in session which means that the lesson money is not stable.

The microfinance Bank job may be an opportunity for her to break into corporate Nigeria. If the position offered is in finance, treasury, IT, internal control, admin or operations, she should take the bank job.

The problem with teaching in Nigeria is that it is easy to get "lost" and become unemployable in corporate world because of lack of basic professional working skills. For a career minded person, the microfinance job is the best fit, irrespective of the pay and the potential stress she may pass through. But the job would help her to build, acquire and accumulate some capabilities that would help her in later years while looking for other opportunities.

Teaching job has almost zero risk, micro finanace banking job carries too much risk.
And of course, the two shouldn't be what anyone is settling for as career.
