Lagos Before Tinubu - A 1991 Publication by seeme2(f): 11:05am On Feb 18, 2023
The scene was awful at the famous
Oshodi bus stop on mainland Lagos.
All sorts of rubbish littered the roads,
the shopping areas, the commuters' hangars
and the railway station. From a distance, the
entire Oshodi area looked like a
battleground just vacated by a plundering
army — a veritable wasteland of some sort.
The unorganised chaos and beauty of the
famous junction were absent. Instead, what
was presiding over the vast emptiness of
Oshodi was a "committee" of rubbish
standing arrogantly at conspicuous places.
The roll call was an unenviable what -is-what.
Potholes, refuse bins, abandoned police
barricades, carcasses of motor vehicles,
portable plank shops, heaps of waste paper
and nylon bags, smelling human waste,
mosquito-infested cans, tins of all shapes
and sizes, disused tyres, iron rods and
anything imaginable, in the world of filth,
littered the daylight jungle of Oshodi as
human beings retreated to the inner
sanctuaries of their abodes, in obedience to
a national call to keep indoors for .a head
count.
Welcome to naked Lagos, poor Lagos.
No thanks to restriction of movement
during the census exercise. For the second
time in a year (the first time was in March
£Lagos was left
bare to show its
naturalness but in
many areas the
outgoing capital
failed to impress...
The city caught the
picture of a
chinaware shop
which had just been
ransacked by a
drunken bull...

when there was a pre-census test) Lagos was
exposed as a sprawling landscape of filth and
a convenient abode for mud-loving swine.
Poor Lagos. In its natural, rustic setting,
the old capital city of Nigeria looked like a
dustbin of nature as the countable
passers-by stood with mouths agape at the
previous day's showcase of pretentious beauty. Now, like an ugly strumpet just
waking up from bed without her make-ups.
Lagos was left bare to show its naturalness
but in many areas, the outgoing capita;
failed to impress. Without its promotional
stunts, commercial plasterings and facades
of beauty that normally make Lagos tick,
jump and intoxicate poets of the intellectual
statures of T.S. Eliot, W.B. Yeats and our
own J.P. Clark, the city caught the picture of
a chinaware shop which had just been
ransacked by a drunken bull.
That was Lagos on the days that its
environment was laid bare like the ue'v
buttocks of a baboon. From Ikeja
Roundabout to Oshodi, from Oshodi to
Mushin, from Mushin to Yaba, from Yaba to Oyingbo and from Oyingbo to Idumota
bus stop the story of Lagos was that of a city
with the semblance of an oil-spillage
environment. Oily sidewalks, stinking
gutters, and sprawling wastes of left-overs
made nonsense of the monthly ritual of
environmental sanitation which was
supposed to have made Lagos a neater
environment.

Kikikiki... All these iragbijirians trying to rewrite our Lagos story.

General IBB just left Lagos, Nigeria's capital in 1991 o.

Between 1996 and 1998 General Buba Marwa had transformed Lagos to a safe place only for Tinubu to institutionalize Agberoism in 1999 again.

I remember what happened in 2005 at Oshodi when one of Tinubu's touts stabbed a soldier to death for trying to separate a fight.
I remember Tinubu going to plead for them at the military cantonment and was walked out .

I wish I could get a clip of how the touts were crying like babies.

Na Borno dwellers like shettima una go dey bobo with Tinubu's Lagos story.

Lagos was still the dirtiest city in the world after Tinubu's tenure, it was Fashola that started the clean up of Lagos, starting from Oshodi to Mushin to Idi-oro and Mile 12...

I have lived in Lagos all my life. Was born here. Tinubu left Oshodi the same way he met it. Molue buses were still on the roads after Tinubu. The sanitization of Lagos (in practical terms, not by claiming ownership of a blueprint) began with Fashola and continued under Ambode. Fashola started the BRT lanes and buses while major cleanup of Oshodi was done under Ambode.

Oshodi cleanup was done by Fashola.... and the same Fashola gives credit to Tinubu so why are you crying more than the bereaved?
The summary is that Lagos is a better managed state compared to others. Rest your case

Re: Lagos Before Tinubu - A 1991 Publication by seeme2(f): 3:37pm On Feb 18, 2023
Foolish people can't understand whatever Fashola achieved is still part of Tinubu's achievement. Isn't Fashola his son, and Ambode (who got the boot for not following the blueprint to the letter) and Sanwo Olu who categorically told the world the father and the son are same.

Asiwaju is not your fathers' mate.

Major cleanup was actually done by Fashola the only thing Ambode did was the BRT lanes and the bus station. Infact, when Ambode entered and disbanded KAI the sanity Fashola had created in Oshodi dropped. If you want to use molue as a means to judge progress which I don't agree to, you would want to know that till today, molue are still operating in Iyana Ipaja, Oshodi etc.

What Tinubu did is kick off the freedom of Lagos from federal allocations but obviously it was a fluke but still creditable to him. It started with landuse charges but now it is PAYE and they are not collecting up to 30 percent of what can be collected. The governor that shifted Lagos to be depended on PAYE has improved on what Tinubu did. LASG is employing 500k people and that is more than the FG. Any state that does same will catch up with Lagos in due course of time. Once again the contribution of Tinubu is that he did not chicken out as did other governors when Obasanjo directed them to cancel the newly created local governments by then. If no issue with Obasanjo I believe Lagos will still be depended on allocations
