There is higher incidence of pregnant women taking alcohol right now in the society and this is alarming considering the risks associated with alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
A neighbour asked me about it today and I decided to source materials and write about it.

Pregnancy is a special time when a woman's body goes through many changes to support the growth and development of a new life. It is essential to take good care of oneself during this time to ensure the health and wellbeing of the growing baby. One of the most important things that a pregnant woman can do for her baby is to avoid alcohol during pregnancy.

Here are some of the reasons why avoiding alcohol during pregnancy is so important:

Increased Risk of Miscarriage
Drinking alcohol during pregnancy has been associated with an increased risk of miscarriage. This risk increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. Women who drink heavily during the first trimester of pregnancy are more likely to miscarry than women who do not drink.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is a serious condition that can occur in babies who are exposed to alcohol in the womb. It can cause a range of physical, behavioral, and cognitive problems, including facial abnormalities, growth deficits, learning difficulties, and intellectual disability. FAS is a lifelong condition that cannot be cured.

Other Alcohol-Related Birth Defects
Even if a baby is not diagnosed with FAS, exposure to alcohol in the womb can still cause other birth defects, such as heart defects, kidney problems, and hearing and vision problems.

Preterm Birth and Low Birth Weight
Drinking alcohol during pregnancy has been linked to an increased risk of preterm birth, which can lead to a range of health problems for the baby. Babies born to women who drink during pregnancy are also more likely to be born with a low birth weight, which can also lead to health problems.

Increased Risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
Babies born to women who drink during pregnancy are at increased risk of SIDS, which is the sudden, unexplained death of a baby under one year of age.

Negative Effects on the Mother
Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can also have negative effects on the mother's health. It can increase the risk of high blood pressure, liver disease, and certain types of cancer.

In conclusion, there are many reasons why a pregnant woman should avoid alcohol during pregnancy. Even small amounts of alcohol can have serious consequences for the developing fetus, including an increased risk of miscarriage, FAS, other alcohol-related birth defects, preterm birth, low birth weight, and SIDS. Moreover, drinking alcohol during pregnancy can also have negative effects on the mother's health. It is therefore best to err on the side of caution and avoid alcohol altogether during pregnancy.

If you are pregnant and struggling with alcohol use, there is help available. Talk to your healthcare provider or a trusted professional for support and resources to help you quit drinking during pregnancy. Remember, the health and wellbeing of your growing baby depend on it.
