Habits are characteristics that are ingrained in us; we do them with little or no consciousness.

Just as with many people, you find yourself grumbling about not being appreciated at work and not being promoted despite the number of years spent in the organisation.

You've asked for a pay rise, yet, nothing was forthcoming; you blamed your manager or supervisor for not putting in 'good words' for you.

Truth is, gone are those eras where people get promoted because of several years spent with the company.

Have you looked inward lately? It is your entire fault, yes you!

No one cares until you start caring. What are the habits that have stalled your career and denied you a promotion?

1. Not Building Capacity for more.

You probably came into the organization as a freshman out of college or as an intern. The firm has done well taking you in, and you have been deposited into by measures of training and experience but you have remained almost at the same level despite years. you haven’t proved to your superiors that you have grown in capacity and can take on more tasks.

2. Having the same credentials

Almost everyone starts their first job as a BSc holder. many who remained at such grades for years are not always the first to consider.

Earning more degrees or getting certified courses shows to your employer that you are committed to self-development which transcends to growth for the company.

3. Flaunting the Company’s Policies

If you are the type that has continuously flaunted the policies of the company, forget it, you are the last person to be considered for a promotion.

Flaunting policies shows you are a ‘bad egg’ and unfit for leadership roles. If policies do not sit well with you, discussed them with your manager or leave with your pride.

4. Slacking with work
Turning in projects and deliverables late presents you as a lazy worker and thus cannot be given more tasks, hence no promotion.5. Being Anti-social
Whether we agree or not, not many of us like to work with a social psychopath. Refusing to socialise because you are a ‘jack of all works’ ironically doesn’t make you get noticed.

Maintain a healthy relationship with your colleagues and superiors.

We cannot undermine the importance of someone ‘putting in words ‘for you.

5. Poor self-Image
No one wants to make the head a person who can’t even put himself/herself together.
If you aim for a leadership role in your firm, then walk and talk like you are already a leader. Dress the part, take on more delegations and be more involved in the growth of the company.

6. Showing no passion for the Job
Most superiors can smell from a mile a nonchalant that isn’t passionate about the job even if you put up a façade.

If you are in an industry you are not enthusiastic about, switch over rather than remain fixated on a job that will probably not fetch you happiness and promotion. You don’t want to lose on both sides.

7. Remaining in the Same Job Longer than
Necessary

Sometimes, your promotion or career growth simply lies in you switching jobs either within the same field or an entirely different industry.

One of the disadvantages of staying on the same job longer than necessary is, you come off as an ‘old dog' who can’t learn a new trick especially if you have not acquired new skills or certifications in years. Your employer would rather bring in an outsider who is better updated or bypass you and promote someone in the company who has continually shown capacity.

Thank goodness, habits can be unlearned and new ones can be picked up. If you have faulted in one or more of these habits listed above, you can still redeem yourself by making corrections and carrying out a personal rebranding.

Are you a manager, HR or a supervisor, what other habits can deny one promotion at work and stalled their career? Please share with us.

Thank you as you take out time to answer.

You know some only come to work for salary they don't really want to work. Imagine someone not showing up for work but want to collect salary like how this that work. Especially those that work from home and then still come late to work. A lot of jobs in Lagos, people come late and then they want to collect money.

I cannot just leave, I prefer to be sacked by her. She really helped me by employing me, when I lost hope of getting a job. I owe her a lot. If I leave she will use it as a point of reference not to help other people in the future and that I am an ingrate. Despite her sexual advances on me, my conscience will not be at rest, if I leave on my own. But once she sacks me now...I will just smile and walk away.

True, we can't deny the Nigerian factor: the unhealthy working environment and the African syndrome of being scared of letting others grow for fear that they might take over... That is so 'old school ' we the millennials can change the narrative as we give other people chance to grow even if it means them surpassing us..

Thank you for engaging with me

1. Being over religious at work: Your work place is not the place to be reading your bible habitually or be singing praises and worship not minding the distraction you are causing for other workers. Some will fast for days running into weeks or months as declared by their churches only to get to work and become weak and tired to lift a finger. Some muslims will want to observe all the hourly Islamic prayers because they are faithful and cant afford to renege on their religious precepts. You will be surprised that rather than to be promoted because of your spirituality, you may not only be stagnant on a position, you may eventually be let go.

2. Eye service: Rather being proactive, you are only active when your boss is around or when a Management staff is in the scene. Dont think this will form their basis of judgement about you, even if you are able to deceive them into promoting you, you cannot sustain this for long before your true personality is revealed. If your boss is not aware of your eye service, your colleagues know about your strategy and they are only waiting for the right time to expose you, not because they are jealous but because your habit of performing eye service is actually irritating to everyone. Eye service cannot take you anywhere, even if it gets you somewhere, it wont take you far.

3. Unecessary delegation: There are tasks that you perform and there are tasks that you have to delegate. If your boss expects you to carry out a task but you pass it on to your subordinate to do, you are indirectly passing a message that you are incapable and your subordinate is better than you and more qualified to do it. You may think you are training your subordinate to be more competent, yes you are right, you are also grooming him to replace you. If you have to train a subordinate on the job, make sure you are there so that you wont give the impression that you are lazy to do the job. Don't get it wrong, there are times you actually have more urgent tasks to perform, or an important appointment to attend and in these case your superior must be aware that you have delegated the given reaponsibilty to someone else. But in the case where you are specifically expected to do a work, dont pass it to someone else without any obvious reason if you don't want to become irrelevant. This leads me to the next similar point.

4. Always complaining or looking for excuses: If you are the type that always complains or always seeing something wrong in every work given you, you will be becoming toxic for others to work with and you may be doing yourself a disservice. If something is not right, ensure you make necessary moves to correcting it. For instance, if the filing system in your office is so disorganized or there is a poor network system or it is is not functioning at all, rather than be grumbling about it all about the office or using that as an alibi to become idle, call the attention of the concerned officers to it for their action. Don't see things lie fallow and you lay back waiting for someone else to see it and do something. Be the first to make a move for solution, don't exhibit an "I don't care" attitude.

5. Not being approachable: How approachable are you and how are your interpersonal relations with your superiors, colleagues, subordinates or co-workers in general? Your boss must not be timid to call on you, your colleagues should not be intimidated when working with you and your subordinates should not be afraid to work closely with you. Be open to others, hear their suggestions, give them chance to prove their point and don't always impose your ideas on others. Also be free to discuss or work with anybody. Don't make yourself an island that should stand alone and at the same time don't give people too much ground to step on, otherwise, they will overstep their bounds and it may backfire at fire. Generally speaking, just give people the chance they deserve but don't give an impression that you are everything goes.

Thanks Op.
