Amazon plans to lay off 9,000 more employees, mostly in AWS and as we know this is powered by cloud engineers, IT technical support staff, tech managers and marketing staff. I have never been a big fan of FAANG but I reckon people should work there for like 1 year to boost your CV so recruiters would always be looking to hire once you add Ex-FAANG software engineer on your LinkedIn title.

Now, I wonder if all those 8 stages of rigorous interviews would make sense anymore seeing that there is no job security apart from Apple, and your job can be lost just like any other medium-size tech companies. I know some people on NL have made these companies their dream place to work but right now realistically, is it really worth it? Would It also be worth it 2 years down the line? If job security is gone, would the only perk just be for the prestige?!

I would say It is better to aim for smaller companies with great opportunities, where you and your small team can actually move something. A job where you are responsible end to end and learn and use many skills. Although I have noticed bias in some smaller companies where they also only prefer to hire ex-FAANG engineers first before anybody else, they propose a very high and compelling salary on the same job level and the disparity in salary with your co-worker is so much that It annoys you when you it gets leaked. The tech recruitment industry is very weird.

Smaller companies are laying off more than faang o. A lot of startups have laid off a ton of their devs but you won't hear it in the news cause it's not faang.

I think devs in the west despite the layoffs have no issues. It's those on H1B in like the USA that will be frightening now as they have 60 days to find a new job which is impossible with all the present layoffs at the moment

Oh really, do you have a list of those other companies?

I have been seeing several people saying they moved back to India, some didn't even wait till those 60 days elapse, they already gave up. It would be much harder for married folks to move back though.

Indians marrying outside of their culture is not that common, they rather marry each other irrespective of the visa status which I think is great because for Indians, you hardly hear of divorce or legal battles.

Yes there are, but you keep forgetting about the Indian population and those migrating are a lot more than native Indian born citizens. It is not proportional.

Turbulent times. With AI and layoffs how will things settle?

Tech has gotten harder, and the amount of AI and no-code tools has taken a lot of regular jobs from Web Designer. It'd rough out there, one might have to divert into another type of skill.

Many of these pros are realizing how disposable they were working for the large tech companies and will be looking for opportunities to feel more valued... It's not just tech.

What is the likelihood of being recruited by a startup vs a big tech company as a foreigner? How many startups have the legal departments and resources to push for visas for new foreign employees? Why should startups - as the name implies - go the extra mile just because of a tabula-rasa employee when there are ex-employees from big tech companies?

For instance, in the US biotech industry, startups don't often recruit foreign PhDs because of the legal requirement and costs. Unless the person has performed wonders, companies prefer to employ permanent residents or citizens. It is the reason most foreign grads aim at Big pharma or big biotech, then once experience or citizenship is attained, they crossover to startups for higher pay and more responsibilities.

See cases of those who have PhDs wailing because no one is willing to sponsor, and unlike tech, biotech startups is where research and development is cherished and actually done.

There is nothing weird there. It is simply business. An ex-McKinsey employee would be accorded more responsibilities and higher remuneration than someone from a tier-4 consulting company or a recent MBA grad because it is believed the McK employee has been thoroughly grounded and knows his/her onions, which is true.

It is the reason ex-Big4 employees in Nigeria get fast-tracked when they join banks or other companies after say four years at a Big4. The quality of experience differs. That is capitalism.

Na normal American thing...

They will fire many and hire new people latter..

I think it's a strategy to provide start ups with experience personnel's.

It's also a strategy to realign the company...

Las Las we go all they ok.

Not every job sponsors H1B. Even in tech not every job sponsors H1B. Restaurant or driver jobs do not sponsor at all so there aren't any option.

Nothing should stop anyone from applying from their dream companies. I don't believe in dreams though. Businesses are made for profit so layoffs are not unexpected. Some of the positions were opened at a lower pay. If outside the US, it's easier to get employment with the big firms.
