So often people will advise you to try and start something of their own, be a boss. But what if I don't want a business. What if I want to just grow in a chosen career path, work, get paid and retire? Will I regret it later?

Absolutely no! Not everyone is business oriented, besides there are many jobs that will pays you better than those engaging in SME businesses.

All you need to do is to invest towards your retirement period to avoid regret. Buy lands, Gold, and invest in foreign stock markets if you can.

It's not a must. You can suit yourself and do nicely. You only become a success if you set a realistic goal in your job and achieve it. Like doing your work excellently.

However, the reason people preach and emphasize on building a business is to create a financial security you can fall back on in case the future isn't really favourable to your job,you need security over your future. Anything can go wrong anytime in a job.

Well, there are things you can do sideways that can still give you more comfort without affecting your job. Smart, great people build security over their lives.

How is that bad? Being an expert in a field is a form of business especially when you know your onions. The truth is, we are all selling something to make money. The so-called boss is selling goods or services. You as an expert, you're selling your skills. As a career driven person, you're the boss of yourself when you attain a level where employers seek you and not the other way round. You can be a director, CEO, etc. in a multinational publicly listed organization without having to start your own business. It doesn't get more "boss" than that. The CEO of KPMG did not start any business of his own, yet he's a boss. He is a shareholder and his share is worth more than many businesses out there. When he retires, he'll still be making money from the organization like a typical business owner. Of course, that is not an easy height to attain just like starting and running a successful business of that size is also not easy.

They say being a boss is cool cause you decide when to go to work. But the reality is, business owners work more than most employees who have been in the labour market for the same number of years. They say business owners are richer, and that's true for the most part. If you are a nurse, the owner of the hospital is likely to be richer. If you are a profession salesperson, the owner of the business is likely to be richer. But this is not enough to generalize cause people are in different fields. You starting a purewater business doesn't guarantee you'll be richer than an employed software engineer. The shoe manufacturer in Onitsha isn't necessarily richer than the CBN governor chose career. Let's also not forget the business owner is a risk bearer and your peace of mind counts towards your standard of living.

The more people create businesses, the more people need professionals. You're not wrong for choosing to be the professional. Even if you want to be a business owner, you're not obliged to take that decision now. You can pursue your career now and decide later. It's not a waste of time cause you're gaining capital and experience. Businesses run by owners who don't have the necessary professional experience are more likely to stagnate at a particular scale. You're more likely to succeed and have a happier life when do something that appeals to you, not something you do cause others are doing it. The only important thing for everyone is to invest. Whether you're a career driven person who just wants to practice or you're a business owner doesn't really matter. Investing is what secures your future.
