How I Got Scammed Thousands Of Naira Just To Get Signed Into A Record(My Story) by kyber(m): 12:10pm On Mar 21, 2023 |
True life story…. This happened just before the elections…I am an artiste that goes by the name boykyber and I don’t operate a fake account here on Nairaland. So I was so desperate for a record deal cause I have been grinding so hard just to push my craft out there and get signed by a label capable enough to make me a star. So I dropped a cover to a popular song that was really nice and smashing in my school, you can check it out through the address below or my signature. https://audiomack.com/Kyber/song/peoplecover So I got a message on Instagram from one record label (name withheld ) telling me they need 5 artiste and i should should drop my details on their WhatsApp for screening so I dropped my song, details and picture to the said what’sapp number…. So after some hours they said my song was nice and they have decided to sign me and I will be paid 300k every month asides feeding and clothing and housing. I was very happy and I told my mum and she celebrated. Well they texted again saying I have to buy a form of 20k and fill it. I was taken aback and was confused but I thought to myself maybe it’s just to see how serious I was about the deal and since it’s just 20k. I thought life is all about risk so I decided to try it . I asked him if that all I was going to pay he said yes. So I googled the label and nothing useful popped up neither was his Instagram page convincing , I only saw a little activity on his Instagram page we’re he posted pictures of other artiste signing documents and comments from fans praising him and wanting to be signed to. There so many untraceable footprints left for me to realize it was a scam but I wanted to take that risk cause I was eager for a record deal Still typing … 1 Like |

So I filled the form via one link he sent me Even the form didn’t look legit but I was still determined to give it a try, I don’t know if there was something behind it oo maybe the guy bathed soap to compel his victims. But I believe it’s not I did it out of my own free will and I’m sure About it cause it was just desperation. So I submit the form and he sent me confirmation through my email. Then he sent his account number (opay) With the name of his record label…I was like since he was Abel to register his business then it might be legit. But the question is , can an account name be edited when using opay? I thought it’s your bank account details you are to link with your Opay account to start using it and it has to tally unless it won’t work, I used palm pay and that is how it was, I had to use my real back account name and details for my palm pay to function . Someone please update me on this. Still typing |

Well I was gullible enough though Well there was network issues affecting my transaction while using uba, there was no cash outside and using Pos was to costly. So I told him to wait till I find service. I used that opportunity to ask him where his office was and he told me in Lagos and i don’t know why I didn’t ask for further address. I asked him when am I to come and start preparations as a fully functional artiste in the label. So he said after the election that he wants everywhere to be cool then he will come pick me up from my present location which is not Lagos . I asked if I could come myself instead to save him the stress but he said it’s not possible . (Gosh how could I have been so stupid ) this I said to myself after the whole charade. He asked me if I had another friend who I can link up to join the label since they needed two more artiste well I said no then he told me to find and tell him all the procedures …. (Murmuring inaudible words to myself ) Desperation Sha what that thing can cause chaii Still typing …. |

Well I finally got a steady network so I was able to transfer the money and he saw it and said okay So I had to wait for the D-day for the pickup. In my mind I was soon to be a star. Well I though the label was a new one though and he confined it by telling me it barely 2years old. I said in my mind with the write promotion I will make the label known worldwide. I actually thought my cover song made the label find me and reached out and I was impressed with my progress and I started writing down my first Øffïçïäl hit single . I thought about who I could link up to join my label and I found 2 of my guys Sha who where interested cause I put them on based on the trust they had for me. I just wanted to draw my padi them join body. Well they sent me their details and i sent it to the label owner and they paid their form money and registered …well we just had to wait out the election OMO no be voting con Dey my mind again o Na how to blow be the Koko now I was just picturing everything in my head chai Still typing … |

Sorry bro, they run you street. Yes, you can edit your account details on OPAY, even Palmpay sef. So far it's at tier 1. At least you've learnt your lessons now. Next time, you'll do your homework very well not to fall for scams like this. Once again, sorry Bro. 1 Like |

Well days later I got a Dm on WhatsApp from the label boss telling me I have to pay extra 15k for processing fee, he said he is sorry for not telling me earlier on OMO my head Tashi, I said processing for what like what are you processing? He said that’s just way it is to be done and that’s the the last payment. Lol I was so pissed so I asked him if we can pay when they come pick us up cause me personally I had already exhausted all my funds on food stuffs based on election and cash scarcity, I had to stuck my room with food. He said it’s not possible that I have to pay first . He asked me how much I had with me and that’s where I finally drew the curtain. I asked him if that would hinder my record deal and he said yes . He said the 20k is non refundable and I knew if I paid another 15 he would keep asking for more with a different means or he might just block me OMO I just told him okay no problem. He sensed I wasn’t buying into the new update so he stopped chatting me and I didn’t block him either. OMO I let my friends know and they pinned it on me telling me to pay them their money but I was Oy trying to help them. They didn’t care and I had to pay the fund myself. As Yoruba people would say gbèsè rè …òni gbèsè Well I paid and I lost total of 60k .. 4weeks ago Just cause I told myself life is all about risk and decided to take a leap of faith. Well I was so embittered and decided that nothing of such or something else relating to money issue online stuffs would ever get me scammed again as a record label who wants to sign you would do that for free, since they would obviously make money off you through your records. Well that was how it played o, my people that is my story. 1 Like |

Wotoporiously speaking Young and naive, this is not how to sign a record deal, sorry bruv they bleeped you over. * No physical meetings, no lawyers involved from both ends, no contract agreement between both parties before signatures and no direct contact from the label manager or managements themselves; be it through video call or physically. No true label would ever ask you to pay a fee for getting signed unless you're just ignorant and desperate and they will feed off that but when they see you know what you're doing they can't Bleep with you like that. If the above is not done just know it's a scam. Lastly do a full research on the label, I mean everything should be accounted for, not even a single detail should be left out. Next time be wise...na street you dey man Goodluck |

these criminals play on the greed of Nigerian people, but most importantly on their desire to cut corner and get what they dont deserve. here is a simple clue: if you indeed have talent, nobody will ask you to pay them anything to sign you. 1 Like |

kyber: brotha, you paid them because you were gullible enough to believe that they were gonna give you a recording contract and that you will become the next Burna boy and/or Wizkid.... just like a donkey going after a carrot! now listen, if you have talent/skills etc, NOBODY will make you pay to sign a recording contract... not a Kobo! |
