No offense, I will delete that part from my post but a lot of Nigerians use English words loosely without truly understanding the meaning of what they just said it wrote, the. We take offense when foreign bodies ask us to write English proficiency exams.

A proper English sentence that is not meant to be ambiguous should leave no room for misinterpretation. A good example is the misuse of the word “couple”. E.g a couple of minutes. The word “couple” means precisely 2 but most Nigerian use “couple” to mean few.

If we do not understand the language we may think we are communicating but we are not.

The English language can be deliberately ambiguous so it is important people understand the meaning of the words being used. For instance, you complain and I say “I will look into it” and you go away thinking, I will act upon my findings. That is not what I said! I said “I will look”. Next time someone promises to “look into something” you have to ask what he means by look and what action to expect because look is not the same as act upon the findings of his looking. I will look into it also does not specify when I will look into it. So you have to be careful with English words and what people are really saying to you. It is a very sneaky language for those who understand it talk less those who don’t fully.
