1789-99 is instructive.

Well to do thinkers and philosophers are always in the background of of defending any territories values and norms. Without such thinkers, anarchy would result. They ensure that they get out the voters and create numerical overloads in strategic areas. You think those numbers you saw at the pu are imaginery? Check irev and see. They might not have directed or even welcomed the unpleasant events and excesses that occurred but they were adamant that never again would the Lagos cession of 6 August 1861 re-occur.

And feel free to call people like them whatever names you like. Many of us are ivy league educated, over 60 and urbane. Tolerant but yet understanding that history cannot be overwritten in or by any generation. Each generation should make their own. Over writing history is the lazy man's attempted legacy.

Neither you or I will be around in a 100 years but Lagos will ( if that is still the name it carries)

Look the period u quoted, 1861 as far back as colonial age, the portuguese first came and did business with u and left peacefully. You guys should really direct ur anger on the british and stop hiding like cowards. Igbos in lagos never raised arms or carry weapon to take over ur land. Moreover the person they wanted to vote for is ur son who u openly rejected. It wasn't the igbos who rejected him nor an igbo man on the ballot. You guys displayed two things fear and tribalism. And the world is aware of this sadistic attitude. Theres no amount of analysis that can justify what u guys did. It thought alot of ppl that some yorubas are extremists in disguise.. you have autocratic mindset. The damage is been done and u guys equally accepted ur fate. I believe there will be more attacks on igbos physically or phychologically.

Igbos are citizens of nigeria and they pay there tax in ur state, so why do u deprive them their right? If truely u dont want igbos in ur state help them get biafra they've been fighting for so they can leave asap. Dont transfer the aggression or anger u have for the british to igbos, they are not ur enemy.

If you are scared of igbos taking over ur land dont sell anything to igbos. Create that boundary so we know were we stand. My goodness what is really wrong with you people?

It is not a fear of igbos taking over the land. It is the fear of traditional values that tantamount to values being ignored and disrespected. When I am in the east, I am told that kolanut does not understand English or a woman's prayer. In other words it requires a male igbo man to break it.

Every area has its culture and values and this is why at its best Nigeria must become a true federation not this hybrid monster we claim as a federation. I must respect the culture of the Igbo and they must respect mine. Lagos is yoruba and whether an igbo man buys acres of land, the residual title still belongs to the state and where the state obtained it from an individual, it remains with the that family. Nobody is worried about doing commercial transactions with other tribes.

Before this and going back to as far back as the 1950's London conferences, igbo leaders have called lagos a no man's land. This has been addressed so many times but it keeps resurfacing. No other ethnic group including the Nupe and the Benin have such allegations. This has to stop because it is not true.

You say we rejected our own son. Yes and no. We did not reject him because he is igbo. Hovernor Adelekes mother is Igbo and he speaks igbo fluently. Akeredolu governor of ondo has an igbo wife ( what was done to her when she went to imo to seek a senatorial ticket is another story) and governor makinde's wife is Kalabari.

There are two reasons why the people of lagos rejected GRV while voting for Obi in the Presidential.

Firstly he does not live by yoruba culture. His tweets have been anti yoruba, he says he does not think in yoruba, he does not speak the language well and as such he cannot hovern a people whose ethos he does not acknowledge.

Secondly he has zero experience of government. In fact his experience after graduation is patchy. He currently serves as director for a moribund property development company in Asaba! Who in his right senses would submit himself to an unexperienced surgeon who offers "change" and promises yo do his best? Can the lives of the 20 million odd lagosians be put in the hands of a neophyte simply because we want change? Why was someone like Funso Doherty in the ADC not picked instead. It may interest you to know that most of igbo businessmen in the organised private sector voted against him.

Igbos should not play the victim card because they have been the most tribalistic grouping in Nigeria. How many non igbos are in the SE civil service let's not mention government. How many non igbos can buy land in the East? When you look at the voting patterns in the Presidential you see a 90% vote for the son of the soil. In some PU other candidates got zero votes ( even with their polling agent in attendance) In contrast every other state gave them votes. Some by generous margins.

Another reason no one should play the victim card is that the President elect is clearly going to allow more state autonomy over their affairs and draw back the over reaching arm of the Federal government. Everyone can go as high as they want but state distinctiveness will be emphasised. States will be encouraged to pass laws for the good of their citizens without fear.

Let me finish with Biafra. There are UN referendum processes that can be unilaterally commenced without the consent of the host country. None of these has been kickstarted though the lawyers to ipob know them well. There has also been very low integration between the igbo states ehich is a necessary precursor to sovereignty either within or outside the FRN. Unlike the igbo states the yoruba DAWN - Development Authority for Western Nigeria has been functional EVEN when the governors are from different political parties https://dawncommission.org/ There is also Odua investments and wemabod estates which are also sw state initiatives. It seems to me therefore that the SE is not serious about Biafra. It only uses it as a staging horse or pressure group. The SE governors keep lying to their and frustrating their demands for sovereignty.

In conclusion, let us respect one another. This can only come by acknowledging and accepting our differences not by saying they don't exist. If anything we ought to celebrate our differences and acknowledge our history. Lagos has s history. Respect it. There is nothing called no man's land.

When the slave trade was abolished alot of people from haiti, brazil and jamaica came back and developed lagos we are not claiming the owners of lagos. There loads of people who are not yoruba that built lagos. A typical example is festus okotie eboh who was the former finance minister that brought in julius berger to nigeria to built the eko bridge. So i really dont blame nnamdi azikiwe if he really called lagos a no man's land. That statement does not necessarily mean that lagos is a land of chaos but a home for all. Even former governor of lagos state jakande made such statement why didn't u drag him as well?

I wont deny the fact that igbos have issues with fulani tribe because we know the kind of ppl they are. I have a yoruba man who takes care of our family visa. He bought a land and built a school in igbo soil. I have a driver from adamawa who drove my mum and bought a small piece of land in my neighboring town. He also got married to an igbo woman. I can go on and on buh one thing i want to point out is these politicians use every opportunity to divide us for political sentiment.

Thank God you are in nairaland beause i read so many comments most yorubas made about gvr and it was so shameful to read. If u dont want to vote him dont disown ur brother and call him igbo. U guys also called obasanjo an igboman because he supported labour party.

Lagos is a home for every one and it doesnt mean we want to take over lagos. When untited states or united kingdom u will see places that are dominated by blacks that doesn't mean they want to take over there land. That statement "no mans land" is a metaphorical buh u guys put it out of context. If igbos are truely claiming that lagos is theirs u would have seen them carrying weapons.

Bro lets die this issue. Igbos love u buh the likes of ffk and bayo and adamu garba brought this division.

Bros the fact that people contribute to a place does not make them indigenes.

Festus Okotie Eboh did not build Eko bridge. By the time Eko Bridge was built and opened Okotie Eboh was already dead - he died during the coup of 1966. At the time of his death there was no Eko bridge - there was only the Carter bridge built by the British. Eko bridge built in 1975.

On the original settlers of Lagos, You need to do some research and not listen to hearsay. This is what Wikipedia says:
" Lagos was originally inhabited by the Awori subgroup of the Yoruba people in the 15th century. The Awori moved to an island now called Iddo and then to the larger Lagos Island. The Aworis who were predominantly fishermen and hunters called it Oko".

In fact up to the 60's, lagos ended at Fadeyi. From Fadeyi all the way to Ibadan, Akure, Ekiti was the Western Region under Obafemi Awolowo. Lagos was a municipality. It was when it became a state that the Federal Government acquired LagosvMainland, ikeja, Epe and Badagry and incorporated it into the new state. The Western region administered 90% of what is called lagos state now.

Lagosians are very upset with the kind of words coming from the obedient camp especially in twitter rooms.

The way forward is to agree on our differences, and leave each other to administer their territory. There is nowhere in Nigeria that is no mans land. Certainly not lagos. By the way I am from Ekiti, I came to lagos in 1962 when my father was seconded to the Federal cabinet in Lagos but I retain my roots as Ekiti. I am not a lagosian because I have lived in lagos for a long time or because my father was in the Federal government. I am yoruba and I accept the values and norms of my lagosian kin. It is conformity to these values and norms that enable me call myself a lagosian. My lagosian friends still call me "omo ara oke" or " child from the up country" and we laugh. I then remind them that from Fadeyi to Ikeja was old Western region . So once they cross the bridge they must behave themselves - we laugh and that is it.

I will rest here. Please be sensible to the culture of the lagosian and his yoruba kin and we shall all laugh together. We must also be sensitive to people of the SE, SS and various parts of the North. We are all great nation states irrespective of British attempts to lump us together and we should live together with respect .
