In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly by Resolution 62/122 designated March 25 as the The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Year 2023 is no exception, It is with that I bring to fore the Interesting story of Joseph Cinqué and his fellow Africans who were the only slaves ever freed by the United States Supreme Court after having found to have rightfully defended themselves from being enslaved through the illegal Atlantic slave trade.

The Amistad is an incredible story of courage and freedom that serves as an inspiring reminder of the strength of the human spirit. In 1839, a group of enslaved Africans seized control of the Spanish slave ship, La Amistad, while en route to Cuba. After a long legal battle, the captives were eventually freed and returned to their homeland of Africa in 1841.
The story of the Amistad began on the night of July 2, 1839, when a group of 53 Africans, led by Joseph Cinque, seized control of the Spanish slave ship, La Amistad. The slaves had been captured in Sierra Leone and were being transported to Cuba, where they would be sold into slavery. After taking control of the ship, the Africans set sail for Africa with the assistance of two African navigators.

However, the Amistad was soon intercepted by the US Navy and the captives were taken into custody. A legal battle ensued, with abolitionists representing the captives in court and arguing that the Africans had been illegally taken from Africa and should be freed. After a lengthy legal battle, the US Supreme Court ultimately ruled in favor of the captives in 1841. The captives were returned to Africa, where they were reunited with their families.

The story of the Amistad fills in as a moving sign of the strength of the human soul and the power of perseverance. Despite facing insurmountable odds, the captives were able to organize and take control of the ship, and ultimately win their freedom. The Amistad was also an important milestone in the fight against slavery, demonstrating that the justice system could be used to fight for the rights of enslaved people.

Today, the legacy of the Amistad lives on, and its story continues to be an inspiration for those fighting for justice and freedom around the world. There are now several memorials, monuments, and museums dedicated to the Amistad, including the Amistad Memorial in New Haven, Connecticut. The memorial serves as a reminder of the courage and determination of the Amistad captives and all those who have fought for freedom and justice.
