For those who know me , I’m Gosezua the guy who created the thread on beautiful artistic sketches,u can check out my profile for that

But on this thread I’ll like to be addressed as Garden boy,
As a year 3 student of Agricultural Economics and Extensions Services of the Great university of benina
I’ll be dropping the various stages of the cropping season that we underwent
Also I’m privileged to be repping my class and so I have gotten firsthand knowledge of the beauty involved in various agricultural practices


For The we cultivated

Maize
Pumpkin(ugu)
Cellusia (green and Shuko)
Amaranth(green leaf)
Cocorouse
Water leaf
Okro

After the resumption in January
I went as the rep to school farmland to discover that this almost 4 hectare. Of land has fallowed for almost 2 years
It was extremely bushy, the last time it was cultivated was September 2021 mostly due to the strike
The clearing of the land was my responsibility I’ll spare you the details of how that went..just know that it was heitic

After the land was cleared the time came for us to create alley ways and then mark out the places were potential plots will be made on the farm
My prof instructed us not to burn the debris as they would be chopped and used as mulch,my set was to pratice minimum tillage and the mulching would be used to handle weeds instead
My Prof is really a master of what he does and a perfectionist to the core

Anyways that’s me leading my class by example

Plot creation was another very heitic and tiring part of the job
Each student was to get two plots
Measuring 7m by 5m
One plot would be used to plant maize at 75cm by 25cm
And the other for a vegetable at various measurements

This is what we are yearning in our institutions.


Real practical that can be used in reality.

Not those theoretical tales.

I and some other reps were given charge of the nursery of the farm we were to tend to the young vegetables till they were ready to be transplanted by other students
It was extremely strenuous as we Had to water everyday whilst attending classes

Exactly I didn’t fancy the course till I actually started praticals

During clearing. Many taps and pipes on the farm were broken by the different hired labour we contracted to clear the bushy farms
So it took my prof about a week to get bring people to repair the broken pipes and by that time we had already planted , and watering became an issue
Thank God it only lasted a few days before the taps were repaired many students couldn’t cope with the stress

Anyways here is the seed variety of the maize we planted

Agriculture is the future of Nigeria and AFRICA
A nation that cannot sufficiently feed herself will never be developed
The most propserous Nations today do not joke with agriculture but Here in Nigeria we want to jump the gun

After the 1 month holiday
The farm began to look green and as the rains came
So did the reward of our hard work,
There was a lot of challenges
From army worms feasting on our maize plants,
Beetles eating up our pumpkins
Outbreak of diseases on the vulnerable Amaranth green
Its on the Cellusia plant that stood unfazed at all the attacks.

During the cropping season
NPK 15:15:15 was applied as the basal fertilizer
Before Urea fertilizer was used,
It’s interesting to note that Dangote is also into agro chemical products
As one of the fertilizer we used was a product from his company

Almost 2 months into cropping and here we are people

The first batch of harvesting for the vegetables occurred last week
We are still grinding on the farm to be equipped to serve our Country
Faculty of Agriculture to the world
UNIBEN to the world
Nigeria to the World

I thought the practical (FPT) year is year 4.

Well year four is the continuation of the pratical year were we actually go for outstation outside the state
But year 3 is the fundamentals of fieldwork

This is just the truth agriculture isn’t meant to be theory only
