The Gideon Orkar coup, also known as the April 22 coup, was a failed military coup attempt that occurred on April 22, 1990, in Nigeria. The coup was led by Major Gideon Orkar, a middle-ranking officer in the Nigerian Army, who was joined by other military officers and civilians.

The coup was mainly targeted against the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida, who was accused of corruption and mismanagement of the country's resources. Orkar's group planned to overthrow the government, establish a new political structure, and break up Nigeria into several smaller, ethnically-based regions.

The 1990 coup is not the bloodiest coup in Nigeria

The bloodiest coup is the 1966 coup

If the 1990 coup was successful, all the states in the North West and North East except from Kaduna and Taraba won't be part of Nigeria today

Okae expelled states like Kano, Sokoto, Borno etc from Nigeria.

That was one of the reasons the coup failed, as we were later made to understand.

Yes, the coup failed because some states were going to be expelled from the Nigerian Federation.

They should have calmed down and fully take over before doing such a thing.

It was the bloodiest, in terms of total number of lives that were lost, including the coup plotters.

69 coup plotters were executed.

Before this, the highest was the Dimka coup that Murtala was killed. 39 plotters were killed.

Sure…

Brave men who died for what they believed.

The Nigerian Army presently is a shadow of her past self.

Mostly due to “commercialization “ and “ politicization “

Men reduced to mere boys!

Mere boys indeed. You remember Vatsa. He would rather die than beg ibb for his life. Men who went to the gallows with dignity.
