She Was Sold To A Slave Trader After Her Father's Death. by ExploreFeelings(f): 6:46pm On Apr 03, 2023
Nri knew she was no longer safe in her father’s home. Yes, she could hear whispers about what would be done to her as soon as she and her mother were done mourning her father. Of course, they wouldn’t wait that long. She had to come up with a plan before her kinsmen murdered her or sold her as a slave. Her father was no more! Her mother was lost in pain and she had no one to comfort her, no one to cater to her future. She had no future here. She thought about leaving, but she couldn’t go without her mum.

Each day she tried to convince her mum to leave with her, but she was determined to mourn the man whom she loved. She didn’t know what to do about her mum. How could she not see that they were no longer welcome here, or even safe? Couldn’t she hear all the whisperings about imminent danger? How could she let her pain blind her at this moment?

Nri was pacing around her tiny room as she thought about these things. She looked through the half-open mat door then and she could see her uncles pointing at their hut to a strange man. An icy current went up and down her spine. It was just a matter of time before they killed or sold her. She shut the door and sat in a corner in fear. They knew she wasn’t her father’s daughter, though they had kept it hidden. And she knew she meant nothing to them and they had no love for her. They had merely tolerated her all these years.

“What was she going to do now?” “Should she leave without her mum? Will they kill her?” Nri looked around frantically for some signal from anyone or anything to help her make a decision. But there was nothing and no one to help her out. So, she decided then to convince her mum for the last time. If she didn’t accept, she may have to force her to go with her or leave her behind.

Frantically, she rushed to her mother’s hut and was left shocked when she found her uncle and some strange men in it. She wanted to run out, but she couldn’t leave her mum behind. She paused. Her uncles were staring at her with so much evil in their eyes. And she knew they had already planned her death or disappearance.

“It is very unacceptable for men to be in a widow’s hut! Let her mourn her husband in peace” Nri spoke with so much hurt.

“Oh! Your father is dead and your mother has mourned him long enough. No more! We have got to get to rather important subject matters,” One of her uncles said in a small voice.

He was a small man, who had moles all over his face, and he always had that wicked glint in his eyes like a greedy person who Enjoyed taking others’ things. Nri thought he was the most hideous man she had ever seen, and he was. Her wicked uncle was always the mastermind behind the conspiracy against her and her mother. And her other uncle was ever ready to execute his plans.

“Evil souls” she wanted to spit at them. But she had to hold herself in order to find out their plans for her. Her father was a wealthy man, and she knew they wanted all his wealth and land to themselves, especially since they knew he had no offspring. Her father didn’t deserve this…He had treated her with kindness, even though she wasn’t his child. Oh, how she missed…if he were here he would have dealt with her evil uncles.

Still lost in her bitter train of thoughts, Nri was jolted to reality by the strange voice she heard. It thundered from the corner where he stood and throughout the room and for a second she felt the urge to run out to safety. She, however, swallowed hard, stood her ground and stared at the giant in front of her eye to eye.

He was garbed in expensive garments and beads. He was good-looking and over-powering and Nri knew just one slap from him would send her to her early grave. How did she and her mum get here? How?

She rushed to her mum who was looking lost like her mind was gone to get her out of her miserable state. But her mum barely said a word to her, she looked at nothing as endless tears streamed down her eyes.

“Your mother is gone, her spirit has left her and all that is remaining is empty flesh. You need someone else to take care of you, and that’s what we are here for.” Her uncle said like they cared about her future.

She wanted to say something, but no words came out of her mouth. Nri silently prayed that her mum would stand up and say something. She waited for the strong woman she once knew to chase the men out of her hut. But her mum said nothing; she just leaned on the wall like a mere vegetable, like she had no life. This was it! Nri’s fate was sealed. She was going to die a slave. And no one cared… no one came to her aid… It was over for her. She wept inside.
