Why Taiwo Akerele Has a Good Chance Under Tinubu's Government Matters Arising

It is undeniable that Nigeria has a leader who has since planned for leadership based on the outcomes of the recent presidential elections, which saw APC presidential nominee Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu win the hotly contested polls. This exemplifies the adage that "opportunity meets preparation."

For someone who seemed to have fought strong forces to become the APC flag bearer and then engaged in even more fights on the eve of the general elections, it was surely a well-deserved victory.

From the start, there were significant forces working to keep Tinubu from running in the presidential race.

The lowest point for Nigerians since the end of the civil war was inflicted upon them in an effort to stigmatise and despise Tinubu's ambitions, a situation where you have money but can't access it, have no fuel to power your domestic and daily activities, and the country was on the verge of being declared a failed NATION.

It was a merited win, and Asiwaju could only have achieved it by being competent—having the ability to carry out a task successfully or effectively.

When opportunity and preparation combine, the potential for luck exists, and many beautiful things can happen.

With Tinubu in office, the nation would have another fantastic opportunity to showcase brilliant individuals with exemplary records of service to the nation as well as devoted party members who have supported the party and delivered verifiable results.

Taiwo Akerele, an unassuming, consummate professional who has deployed his cognate experiences on many projects within the country, throughout West Africa, and around the world, is one such gentleman who would make the nation proud.

Akerele, a graduate of the University of Benin and a master's degree holder from the University of Ibadan, has taken courses at Harvard and other Ivy League universities.

Taiwo began his career in banking, making a name for himself with companies including Fidelity Union Merchant Bank, United Bank for Africa, and Afribank.

From 2012 and 2015, Akerele was entrusted with the implementation of a $150 million Edo State budget support programme from the World Bank to encourage public sector reforms under the Adams Oshiomhole's administration.

Before being named the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Edo State, Akerele also oversaw the SEEFOR project, a World Bank-supported youth employment initiative for Edo State that employed thousands of young people in public works projects around the state between 2011 and 2016.

Upon his voluntary resignation as Chief of Staff in 2020, Mr. Akerele re-dedicated his time and resources to drawing the international community's and the government's attention to Northern Nigeria's out-of-school children situation.

Currently serving as the World Bank's technical advisor on operations for Nigeria's post-Covid-19 economic recovery programme (NG-CARES), Mr. Akerele is also a proponent of the Borrow Right Africa initiative of Policy House International, which encourages responsible borrowing for developing nations in Africa.

He has authored over 30 academic and non-academic published papers on leadership, government, debt, and education, both alone and in partnership with others. Renowned academic and development academics have also frequently cited his works.

Taiwo Akerele has been nominated for more than ten awards, including two honorary doctorates from prestigious international educational institutions.

As a core party loyalist, Taiwo delivered his constituency to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the last presidential election and was a strong support pillar of the Tinubu/Shettima presidential bid; with such sure plugs in Tinubu's administration, the Nation would be ready for robust youthful representation that would put the Nation back on a sound economic growth path.
