How to retrieve your money after a wrong transfer or money is taken out of your bank account by scammers/phone thieves and the receiving bank is not cooperating.

1. Write out the Full name, account number & bank of the person who received the money.

2. Go to the last debit notification sent from your bank after the transfer (via mobile app or text) and copy out the "TRANSACTION ID NUMBER".

3. Visit any of the bank branches of the receiver (the bank the money was transferred to), and ask to see the Customer Service in charge of Fraud.

4. While you are there, send an email to the recipient’s bank wrongly transferred to and copy CBN Fraud Desk. Emails below

(anticorruptionunit@cbn.gov.ng). CC: cpd@cbn.gov.ng & contactcbn@cbn.gov.ng. This will encourage the bank to act fast.

5. The recipient’s account will be placed on hold. Their BVN will be blocked permanently, preventing them from transacting with it or opening a new account.

They can’t transfer, withdraw or even open a new account with their BVN until they visit their bank to clear it up. When they do, the bank is obligated to contact the police. When proven guilty, the suspect will sign a waiver allowing the bank to refund your money.

Ethical caveat: Using this method in a case of wrong transfer only works after you have contacted the receiver & they refused to send your money back or blocked you.

What of fraudulent POS withdrawal. Someone stole my friend's ATM card and withdrew through POS. The bank said they can not help locate the POS machine used. We are sure it most be someone close and if only we could locate the Machine used, the vendor might be able to identify the with-drawer.

This is very insightful, but what about if you do not have the person's cell number and the recipient banks doesn't want to give you his or her details?

@cliqtips and everyone else

How about a case where one mistakenly transferred money to a wrong account, does not know/have contact information of the owner of the bank account where the money was wrongly transferred to, and the banks have not done anything to help recover the money after complaints were made and a police report was obtained?

When you send money to someone, it will show the full name of the receiver.

It doesn't works this way

Recipient bank will not even attend to you at all, rather they will ask you to contact your bank for assistance and when you contact you bank they will ask you to wait for some days whereas they will not do nothing till you are frustrated and let go of the money

Best thing is to send mail to fraudhelpdesk of your bank then go to state headquater of NPF in your state to report the case, they will get order to freeze the recipient account and if the recipient makes a move to unfreeze his bank account he will be apprehended. If he fails to show up and thebank confirmed the money is still in recipient account, you can proceed to court to get court order for reversal of your money. Court will sit and issue order for bank to return your money in full (provided the amount in the recipient account is still up to what was taken from your bank)

The best thing is to avoid getting defrauded

You can also use a method refered to as call back method. I don't know of other Banks but i have done it in my gtb.
I once sent money to a girl to visit me, but she came of with stories after receiving the money.
I immediately alerted my bank of a wrong transfer. The money was refunded to me after three days

This is great help as many people have fallen into such predicaments but It would be great if it works as smoothly as op posted it...

It will damn near eradicate fraudulent activity using bank accounts.
