In Lagos, you need STEEL Frame for HIGH RISE. With the level of water surrounding lagos, the ground will continue to shift, and it is a disaster waiting to happen now or in the near future. You can do concrete pour to humongous depth, but even concrete fail over time...Steel frame plus concrete pour is the key...the whole building will never collapse vertically like this.

You are right!. I've been saying just that. We are still in the concrete column era in Nigeria. Yet to understand the use and manner of usage of steel in high rise structures. We trust the use of 16mm and 12mm reinforcement rods so much.

The use of U and I beams need to be taught much more in our schools.

By looking at the building in the picture you will analyze how weak that building is.

Instead of buying quality materials to build once and for all, you made it look like it's not important at all, I guess the owner was also trying to copy those Chinese houses.
He must have learnt his lesson already. Banana Island Indeed grin

If you don't know how to design and construct flat slabs, then don't use it. Use the normal conventional construction

To make matters worse officials of Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory Agency will be collecting money from building owners in order to issue fake test results.

Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory is another scam or there are fake people camouflaging as staff of the agency to dupe innocent Nigerians and to put lives at risk. There are so many deals going on in that sensitive agency.

One fake staff from the agency with connivance with some dubious children of the late owner of 71, Oduntan Street, Ketu house pasted a notice on the building last year. This is building built about 40 years ago and still standing strong. No structural adjustment or new development, the fake staff came and pasted the agency notice.

It was when intelligence agency got involved that a LASBCA senior official said Material Testing Lab could not have done that. He said the guy should be tracked and dealt with .

He is very lucky, they wanted to track him with military intelligence and make him to reveal the shoddy deals going on in that agency.

Always perform all necessary tests before una build na. How can you buy lands billions per SQ meter and can't or rather refuse to conduct integrity tests at every level of your building.

Do people bother to ask about how integrity tests applies and matters to construction projects especially in high rising buildings at all?

If we say that as a society all buildings from certain heights must have integrity tests at every levels, are these tests not supposed to be scrutinized by the governing authorities from before and during building processes ?

And to think it's Banana island, written about on Wikipedia as the home to Nigeria's brightest minds and the cream of the society, yet in such quintessential issues fail woefully ?

How can Africa be ever redeemed how?

From the pictures, it's clear to see that it's yet again Chinese building technology.

I've always maintained that I don't trust modern Chinese architecture that focuses on material and cost reduction over safety concerns. No be me go stay for those buildings that looks like houses constructed over bamboo sticks

Please leave China out of it, the technology cannot be at fault it's the humans who cut corners

The frequency of building collapse under Gov Sanwo-olu is becoming too much.

LASBACA and LMTL are two agencies in Lagos that should prevent this incessant building collapse. All they do is collect bribes from building owners and contractors and look the other way.

Nobody in those agencies will be punished. It is considered as a family affair.

We await the next collapse.

Last deadly earthquake in Turkiye that took away over 50000 souls, exposed corruption existing even in hard line governance environment.
Turkiye building codes MUST be earthquake proof, contracts was awarded to build such buildings for the safety and health of would be occupants.
Probably approval was given, by officials who looked way as contractors acted the usual way.
Eleven years after, their hidden corruption was exposed, arrest was made.

Please give Nigeria as a nation a break.

Merely looking at the Building you can already see that it has the Wrong type of Pillar Construction

The Construction of these Pillars cannot support more than a maximum of 4 Stories with very good planning

and Techniques and with lots of Grade A Iron rods reinforcing the Concrete

It's Chinese tech. Bro you're in us. We're here. I've been raining alarms since five years that many buildings on the island are going to collapse. I'm still ringing the alarm. The buildings were not constructed following the best possible safety measures

Your mother doesn't have sense, that's the sense, you lack manners abi? MoFO I grew up in Onitsha, Enu Onitsha precisely, im talking of how many 7 storey buildings are in Onitsha. The higher the structures, the higher the chances of collapsing if not well constructed, how many 4 or 5 storey buildings have collapsed in lagos?
