Top 5 Centre Backs In Football’s History, Do You Agree? by SoccerJungle: 3:47am On Apr 16, 2023
Who Are the Greatest Ever Centre-Backs in Football?

The Centre-back role is a position which size and strength are often the key attributes managers and football scouts look for.
At one time, the centre-back position was mostly reserved for big, brawny men capable of outmuscling an opposing player with ease, but overtime; things have changed.

These players on our list used positioning, passing, ball playing and athleticism to outplay the best strikers in the games.
The following players can be considered the 5 greatest-ever central defenders to play the round leather game

1. Franz Beckenbauer

“Der Kaiser” as he was fondly called, had a blistering club career stretching from 1964 with Bayern Munich to 1983 with the New York Cosmos, with a stop off at Hamburg SV in the course of his career.
He was a leader, capable of taking on the toughest and strongest opponents on the pitch. The long-time Bayern Munich defender won the German Footballer of the Year award on four different occasions and the Ballon d'Or on two occasion.
Nowadays, it’s really tough for a Defender to come close to winning the Ballon d’Or, but Beckenbauer lifted it on two occasions.
Franz also won three consecutive UEFA European Cups with Bayern Munich from 1973 to 1976.
Beckenbauer helped West Germany to the 1972 European Championship glory. Two years later, he lifted the World Cup trophy on home soil after West Germany defeated the Netherlands.
Beckenbauer’s leadership transcended to management after a sterling playing career. In 1986, Beckenbauer led West Germany to the FIFA World Cup finals where they lost to Diego Maradona’s Argentina.
Few years later, “Der Kaiser” took West Germany to the 1990 FIFA World Cup final where they defeated Argentina to win the World Cup.

2. Franco Baresi

Franco Baresi had a 20-year long career playing as a sweeper and for AC Milan.
His debut for the Rossoneri was in 1977 and was part of the club’s transformation that led to eventual Serie A titles and Champions League glory.
He retired in 1997 after making 719 appearances for the Italian side.
Over the years, Italy has produced some talented defenders. Serie A is often (wrongly) labelled as a defensive league due to the tactics implored by some coaches.
Franco is considered the greatest Italian defender in the history of football.
Baresi’s career could have ended up very differently going by what he told Gazzetta dello Sport’s SportWeek magazine that Inter Milan were interested in signing him as a teenager.
However, the scout who was trailing him died, and the club never followed up on the player. Baresi went on trial with AC Milan, and the rest was history.

3. Fabio Cannavaro

Most people are of the opinion that a football player cannot play as a centre-back unless they are tall.
Fabio was a mere 5ft 9in tall, and most of the strikers he faced stood taller.
What Fabio gave up to opposing players in terms of height, he made up for in defensive play which made him unplayable on his day.
The Italian maestro was the last defender to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 2006, while playing for Real Madrid.
He later won the FIFA Player of the Year Award the same year.
The defender lead Italy to the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
At club level, Cannavaro won the UEFA Cup, two Coppa Italia trophies and two La Liga titles for Real Madrid.

4. Rio Ferdinand

There is this “unending” debate about who was better between Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic.
Considering Ferdinand’s longevity in the Premier League at Manchester United, he edges Nemanja Vidic as the division’s best centre-back.
As a centre-back, Ferdinand didn’t really stress himself to win the ball; rather he was able to rely on accurate positioning and athleticism to get the best of attackers.
Ferdinand came through the West Ham academy set up and made his debut for the club in 1995.
The Defender appeared in 145 games for the Hammers, and later moved to Leeds United in 2000 for £18m, making him the most expensive footballer in British football history at the time.
Ferdinand was a key player of the Leeds team that reached the UEFA Champions League semifinals just before the club went bankcrupt
He became the most expensive footballer in English football history in the summer of 2002 once more when Man United paid £33.3m for his services.
It was at Manchester United that Ferdinand attained his iconic feet. He appeared in 455 matches across 12 football seasons.
Ferdinand was one of the backbone of Manchester United’s success throughout the 2000s, winning a total of six Premier League titles, two EFL Cups, one Champions League trophy and a FIFA Club World Cup.

5. Alessandro Nesta

Nesta was smooth, composed and seemingly never ruffled by opposing players.
He exhibited the cool calmness that many Italian defenders have as a character trait.
Not only was Nesta a talented defender, his take-no-prisoners style of defending made was lovely to watch
SS Lazio promoted Nesta to its first team in 1993 after spending eight years in the academy.
Having been approached by Roma, Nesta’s father turned down Giallorossi’s offer due to the fact that he was a Lazio supporter.
Milan paid €31 million to Lazio for Nesta’s services in the summer of 2022. Lazio’s financial issues forced them to sell the Nesta and hand AC Milan one of the best in the world at the time.
He went on to play alongside Cafu and Jaap Stam, Paolo Maldini, forming one of the greatest defences in the history of the round leather game.
