Nasarawa State Supreme Court has convicted Fred Ayokhai, a faculty member at the Federal University of Lafia (FULAFIA), for conspiring with his sons to attack a female student, Blessing Mathias.

Recall that in October 2022, a professor at Lafia Federal University, conspired with his sons to attack a teenager who was beating his daughter over a man. Ayokhai, who reportedly works with the institution’s history and international relations department, was caught on camera while his children attacked and undressed the woman, now identified as Blessing Mathias.

The State Police Command intervened, arrested the accused and brought them to court. The speaker was charged with criminal conspiracy, trespassing, kidnapping and willfully causing serious harm without provocation and assault. Emmanuella, Bob-Praise and Saint-Dan, all of Ayokhai’s children, joined the case as the second, third and fourth defendants.

Although the defendants pleaded not guilty during the charge, AU Idris, their attorney, approached the court with an offer of a plea.

At the sentencing hearing on Thursday, April 20, Presiding Judge Solomon Ayenajeh found the Lecturer guilty and sentenced him to six months in prison for criminal conspiracy and an additional six months for assault. The judge ruled that the charges are concurrent, counting the six months that Ayokhai was in Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) custody.

In deciding the children’s crime, the judge said they will be serving six months probation given their age. The judge said they would be punished by keeping the Nasarawa State High Court building clean during their sentence.

The judge also ordered the third defendant, Bob-Praise, to shave his dreadlocks.

In his speech, Ayokhai thanked the judge and the parties in the matter for their consideration and forbearance. He informed the court that he had taken steps to compensate the victim under the settlement agreement.
