Onyechi Ikpeazu: 7 things to know about lead counsel who defended Adeleke’s victory

Onyechi Ikpeazu made headlines on Tuesday when his client, the incumbent governor of Osun, Senator Ademola Adeleke was declared as the legitimate winner of the July 16, 2022 governorship election by the Supreme Court.

A three-member panel of the appellate court led by Mohammed Shuaibu had as of last year affirmed Adeleke’s victory, nullifying the judgment of the election petition tribunal for “lacking merit”.

Justice Agim, in the Supreme Court judgment, held that the appellant (Oyetola) failed to prove the allegations of over-voting and other irregularities in the conduct of the election.

1. Born in Onitsha, Anambra on April 15, 1959, Dr Ikpeazu has been in active legal practice till date and has served as Chairman of the Onitsha Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association and NEC (National Executive Council) member of the national body, NBA.

2. The US-trained lawyer was conferred with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, (SAN) and in 2007.

3. Some of the landmark cases handled by Dr Ikpeazu include MOJEKWU V. MOJEKWU; MOJEKWU V. IWUCHUKWU preserving the inheritance right of a woman; NGIGE V OBI reported in (2006) 14 NWLR (Part 999) 1, a decision that brought Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi to office as the duly elected Governor of Anambra.

4. It will interest you to note that Dr Ikpeazu is also one of the 12 SANs in Obi’s legal team challenging the victory of Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

5. He is also part of several Senatorial and National Assembly Election Petitions across the country.

6. Besides election cases, Dr Ikpeazu has also provided legal representation in International Arbitrations across several jurisdictions.

7. He is happily married and blessed with children.

For those thinking that the Supreme Court verdict will count against Peter Obi's case should go and read Peter Obi's case again. Peter Obi relied on BVAS Certified True Copies in making his case of over-voting. He is relying on the BVAS to state that he won with large margins in Rivers, Lagos, Benue and Plateau State. He is relying on the BVAS in making a case on the votes he got in Taraba, Kaduna, Borno etc.

Infact Peter Obi was very modest in his case as the votes he is claiming is even less than what is uploaded on IREV.

Ikpeazu was all smiles when talking with the journalists after the Supreme Court verdict. He knows it's a plus for his Peter Obi case.

Have you seen an identity thief, a forger, a perjurer, a convicted drug baron, all rolled into one, as president in Nigeria's history?

Peter Obi is coming...

Which one is he has never lost a case?Research before making such statement and not because some people have been saying it.

Further checks showed Dr Ikpeazu, in 2019, lost his case (AKINLADE V ABIODUN) at the Ogun Election Tribunal after his client (Adekunle Akinlade of the Allied Peoples Movement) was defeated by the then governor, Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress (APC

Dude, Tinubu is not yet a president. Nobody made him a president. The Man is simply inec select. Responding to your post above, this will definitely be the first time you will see an inec select removed and ordered by court to return his certificate. A New Nigeria is possible. Things have started changing son.

This is not federal character?

The best of the best is usually chosen.

When a Yoruba lawyer is chosen to represent other ethnic groups it isn't a problem, isn't it?

When will bigotry go out of the eyes of Nigerians.

Dont mind them..they very dull... especially given the fact that Peter Obi doesn't have presidential charisma of a Nigerian president.

He can't unite the country on any lines, as he's know as a religious and tribal bigot. Yes daddy!!! grin grin

The victory of Adeleke is for INEC and not really for Adeleke and his lawyers, they are just beneficiary of INEC victory guesture. INEC tried to defend her integrity by showing that they were right to announce Adeleke in the first place. On the contrary to obidients, INEC defence this time will favour Tinubu because INEC will be all out in the same way to prove with BVAS that they knew what they were doing by announcing Tinubu as winner. Adeleke victory that INEC defended has proven to us that INEC will win in similar manner on presidential court cases that concern INEC which will favour Tinubu. Remaining direct cases at Tinubu from Obi and PDP are irrelevant and many of them have been nullified before now from other court cases, so obi should be expecting defeat while obidients and obi-idiots among them should be looking for grammar to use to abuse judges, Tinubu, buhari and even obi's lawyers because unlike Osun election where INEC is supporting PDP and Obi lawyer; this time obi's lawyers is in opposition to INEC. Expect Obi defeat because INEC will win her own court cases which will favour Tinubu

That's true with Kenya too until their president select was removed by their supreme Court. If it could happen in Kenya, it can also happen in Nigeria.

There is always a first time!!!

All I see here is just emotions and wishful thinking with zero logic.

The law doesn't work like that. It works based on precedents. What happened in Osun will be referenced regardless of what INEC says. INEC is just a body, it is not the Nigerian Constitution.

INEC that has been in the affair of election in Nigeria and drag to court on yearly basis will not have enough evidence? INEC that has been preparing for court cases even before election started. How many cases have been lost by INEC in recent times? Keep deceiving yourself; and believe whatever you like. At the end of the day reality will hit you
