Mixed reactions trailed the release of a Louisiana man, identified as Patrick Brown who served 29 years for a crime he didn't commit, Newspremises reports.

According to The Guardian, the 49-year-old was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole in December 1994 after he accused of raping his then 6-year-old stepdaughter, a crime he never committed.

However, the victim claimed her stepfather was guilty for more than 20 years and accused another relative, who had boasted about it at the time of the crime, according to court documents and prosecutors' notes from the time.

Brown, who appeared in court on Monday morning, sobbed into the arms of his lawyer as presiding judge Calvin Johnson announced the decision to overturn his conviction.

“For the state to do something as horrific as this is just wrong,” Judge Johnson said, adding: “For us, the government, not to be better at what we do, and how we do it, this [the wrongful conviction] is the result.”

The sexual assault victim failed to testify during Brown's trial and starting in 2002, per Guardian. She allegedly made numerous requests for the case to be reviewed while giving testimony that Brown was not the one who attacked her. But the case was ignored, and it wasn't looked into again until recent years.

In the recent rewind of the case, Orleans Parish District Attorney, Jason Williams, said, “It is incredibly disheartening to know that this woman was dismissed and ignored, no matter how inconvenient her truth, when all she wanted was the real offender to be held responsible.

“When someone is wrongfully convicted, not only is it an injustice for the person who has years of their life stolen, but it is an injustice for the victim and the people of New Orleans because the real perpetrator is left to harm others.”

Brown was released on Monday after Judge Calvin Johnson presided over a hearing during which the office petitioned the court to overturn Brown's conviction.

It was, however, unclear whether the accuser was charged for her wrong claims earlier that made Brown serve almost three decades behind bars.
