China refuses to meet its defense minister with the head of the Pentagon due to US sanctions, the Financial Times reported. According to the publication, Washington is trying to organize a meeting between Lloyd Austin and Li Shangfu in Singapore on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue regional security forum, which is due to be held June 2-4. The Chinese side made it clear that the meeting was hindered by sanctions imposed by the United States against Li Shangfu back in 2018 for the purchase of Russian Su-35 fighter jets and S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems. At that time, Li Shangfu was the head of the armaments department of the Joint Headquarters of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China. He headed the country's Ministry of Defense in March 2023. According to the newspaper, the American side believes that the presence of sanctions is not an obstacle to the meeting of the heads of the two departments in a third country, and conveyed this opinion to the Chinese colleagues. However, according to the sources of the publication, Beijing will almost certainly refuse this proposal, and the Joe Biden administration does not intend to exclude Li Shangfu from the sanctions list. |
