What Nigeria And Its Cities Can Replicate From Kigali, Rwanda. by PROUDIGBO(m): 3:32pm On May 11, 2023
Have recently been watching Youtube clips of Rwanda...especially their capital city Kigali, and needless to say i'm so so so impressed with how safe, neat and organised the country looks! The citizens also come across as well behaved and friendly too, and you notice this in the clips where the tourist travels through the pristine countryside.

I'm quite fussy about the appearance of Nigeria cities and sometimes get impatient and exasperated with our cavalier approach to urban governance and development! Seriously, only Abuja (parts of it) comes close to the order, cleanliness and serenity we see in Kigali, and the difference is all down to leadership and the attitude of the led....simple! I suspect their President Paul Kagame is a perfectionist as well as being a benevolent dictator, and he's most likely kindred spirits with Lee Kwuan Yu of Singapore! You'll see what i mean when you watch the clips.

Kigali reminds me of some of our cities like Enugu, Ibadan.....and Lagos and Onitsha for the busy/commercial parts, and i believe there's a lot we can learn from Kigali that we can replicate in our own cities. After all, Rwandans have the same one head on their shoulders that we have so i don't see why our cities can't look as nice as theirs. Let's not forget, Rwanda, like Nigeria, is a country with tribal schisms and had a civil war...but unlike Nigeria, they don't have oyel and gas and are landlocked to boot! Food for thought as you watch the attached Youtube clips.

These clips are as educational as they're enjoyable (especially the first one) so i urge all to watch in the hopes it will galvanise us to replicate what we see for our own cities!

First clip shows a cycle ride through Rwandan countryside. Notice how the roads are pothole free, marked, clean of rubbish and sediment, and have the necessary signages (don't be deceived by the first few seconds when he's leaving his compound...that looks like a typical street in say Enugu or Ibadan). Also, there's no unsightly commercial roadside clutter and the locals the tourist meets are all so friendly. It's significant that he feels safe enough to be travelling through Rwandan countryside on his own and finding a small budget hotel to lodge in. The views are breathtaking and you could be forgiven for thinking you were watching a clip of the Scandinavian countryside.

Second clip shows the inner streets of Kigali....including it's busy/commercial parts which i said earlier are similar to busy/commercial parts of Lagos, Onitsha, or any other major Nigerian city. Notice the neat clean roads with all the necessary accompanying road furniture, as well as the greenery....manicured grass, shrubs and trees. All traffic lights are working and are obeyed religiously....also, there isn't a tout in sight!

There is not a single Nigerian that doesn't know what to do for this nation to be great but a bent mind will always find way to bend rules

Interesting challenge: while watching the clips (not inside the market oh...even though they're still neat), see if you can count up to FIVE pieces of litter/rubbish on the roads! wink

If we are a serious country we shouldn't even compare our country to Rwanda.

But with the set of people we have at the helms of affairs, we can see why the country is where it is today.
