You cannot attempt to influence an image or someone's character but you can attempt to influence someone.. So, your influence, whether positive or negative, on a person, can make them change their character but you cannot influence their character directly..
For example, to lobby can also be to (influence) in its verb form. So if i might not be able to influence your good character, then, i might be able to influence you to change your good character and it becomes bad.. Now, your question might be, How? Okay, you can decide to stand for the truth and i'll try to talk you into telling a lie and you refuse. But deciding to make you a promise or give you money or material gifts can make you change your mind. Now, that is when i have influenced you negatively.
