Over twelve persons lost their lives In a Stadium stampede which occurred during the football match between two local El Salvador team, Alianza vs Santa Ana.

The sad incident brought the game to an abrupt end with President Nayib Burke describing the event as “sad and unprecedented” while revealing that a comprehensive investigation is underway.

In a statement released by the police, it says that seven (7) men and two(2) women were among the casualties.

What triggered the disaster was when a large number of fans tried to gain entry to the stadium after the gates had been shut.

Stadium officials believe that some fans bought fake tickets from fraudsters.

CCTV footages shared by local news media revealed how fans attempted to pull down barricades at the stadium entrance

The match was suspended after an apparent commotion in the stands; people were later seen being carried away on stretchers by the stadium emergency services.

Some fans were seen trying to offer first aid to the unconscious ones by waving their shirts at people on the ground in a bid to try and cool them down.

"It was an avalanche of supporters who overran the gate," a volunteer with the Rescue Commandos first aid group spoke to journalists, saying; "some of them are still under the metal in the tunnel. Others managed to make it to the stands and then to the field and were smothered."

President Bukele said "everyone" will be thoroughly investigated, including managers, teams, stadium officials, the league management and the federation.

"Whoever the culprits are, will surely not go unpunished," he said in comments posted via Twitter by his press secretary.

Officials also said that over ninety (90) people were being given medical attention, and that children, women and men had been treated for "multiple traumas".

The Salvadoran Soccer Federation announced that all national level football matches on Sunday would be suspended indefinitely. It also said it regretted what has happened and sent condolences to the affected families.

Francisco Alabi, El Salvador's health minister tweeted that the government had swiftly deployed ambulances from nearby hospitals to the stadium with the injured being sent to different public institutions for proper treatment.

Mr Alabi also called for the general public to cautiously evacuate the stadium to make it easier for medical teams to carry out care effectively.
