The Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, has desribed President Muhammadu Buhari as a hero to Igbo people .

Uzodimma stated this on Tuesday during the commissioning of the 2nd Niger Bridge by the president.

Uzodinma hailed Buhari for completing the bridge and other infrastructures in the region.

The governor and other South-East leaders named the bridge after Buhari, and the federal secretariat complex built in Awka, the Anambra State, after the first female engineer and Head of Civil Service, Mrs Ebele Ofunneamaka Okeke.

The governor, who described the new bridge as a link to Old Eastern and Old Western regions of Nigeria, said the President by delivering the project had become a hero to him (Uzodinma) and the entire Igbo nation.

He said, "We have cried to many government for years yet the projects were not done. The state of the First Niger Bridge make it difficult for our people returning for Christmas and other festivities to sometimes spend five days or more on the road. We thank President Buhari for delivering the projects even though he begged for our votes but we didn’t give him our votes. He is a hero to me and people of South East."

Speaking, Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, wished the President well as he prepared to leave office on May 29, commending him for completing the projects in the area.

Soludo said the 2nd Niger Bridge would boost economic activities and ease of doing business in the Imo and Anambra and other states, while impacting positively on the lives of the poor and the rich.

In the different speeches, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige and his counterpart in the Ministry of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, said the southern part of Nigeria would remember the Buhari-led administration as the two projects would reduce the cost of governance and transportation as well.

Earlier, President Buhari, who spoke vitually, during the official commissioning of the projects described the 2nd Niger Bridge as a choice bridge and a reality.

He said the bridge was among numerous infrastructural projects his administration completed nationwide.

He said the bridge would equally serve as a means of connectivity, interaction and integration between regions, states and communities.

He said, "It will reduce travel time, improve business efficiency, timeliness and service delivery. I declare them open for public use. They were funded from recovered assets and others. Our anti-corruption drive are yielding positive results.
Meanwhile, the Indigenous People of Biafra has protested the naming of the Second Niger Bridge after Buhari.

The group, in a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, rejected naming the bridge after Buhari, “because he came to power and completely sidelined our people.”

IPOB claimed that under Buhari’s watch, South-East youths were being slaughtered by security agents with reckless abandon.

It said the facility should rather be called Achuzie Bridge or named after any other accomplished Igbo patriot, adding that no big project in the North had been named after an Igboman.

The secessionists said,"Under his watch, terrorists masquerading as Fulani herdsmen have invaded our communities, killing innocent men and women after destroying our farms with their cows.

The group also denied the allegation of the Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola, that IPOB disturbed and delayed the construction of the 2nd Niger Bridge.

The group's statement read in part, “The South-East has more credible names and more important persons, who the Federal Government can name the Second Niger Bridge after. We have a galaxy of accomplished Africans like Prof Chinua Achebe, Chu Okongwu, Cyprian Ekwensi, Alexander Ekwueme, Chief Michael Okpara, Dr Akanu Ibiam, Mbonu Ojike, Chief Kenneth Dike, Eni Njoku, Dora Akunyili, Dr Sam Mbakwe, Achuzie, Phillips Efiong and the living legend, Chief Amaechi Mbazuruike

“All these names mentioned above are eminently qualified for the Second Niger Bridge to be named after them. The Second Niger Bridge was awarded since 1979 by the Shehu Shagari administration and since then, no administration found it worthy to execute, but IPOB’s agitation for self-determination pushed this APC administration to reluctantly embark on its construction, using the funds past Nigerian politicians looted and starched away in Europe.

“We are aware of the condition given by a certain European country that they will only release stolen funds starched away in their country if the funds will be channelled to the construction of the Second Niger Bridge. This is what compelled the Nigerian government to embark on the bridge project and not out of love for the Igbo people of Biafra. We reject naming the bridge after Buhari when we have other better names.”
