Security: Jonathan lacks political will, says Afenifere

AKURE—THE Yoruba Socio-Political group, Afenifere, yesterday expressed concern over the state of the nation and asked President Goodluck Jonathan to deal with the myriads of problems threatening the continued existence of Nigeria with “a strong political will irrespective of whose ox is gored.”

In a statement by its leader, Chief Rueben Fasoranti, in Akure, the group said it was disturbed “and constrained to call your attention to the situation for a quick redress before anarchy takes over and the state machinery grinds to a halt.”

Negetive forces at work

Fasoranti who said there were negative forces threatening to frustrate the objective of trying to lay a solid foundation for a successful administration of President Jonathan, however blamed President for not demonstrating the political will to tackle the problems.

Afenifere listed the negative tendencies to included Boko Haram activities such as suicide bombing in parts of the country and strikes by organized labour and Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

It said other problems confronting the country, included the Justices Katisna Alu and Ayo Salami crisis rocking the nation’s judicial system, natural disasters like flood, carnage on the roads and the killings in Jos.

Harvest of bad governance

According to the group these problems were harvest of bad governance, saying “these are just too many negative side of the scoreboard. They should be reversed and all of us with goodwill in this country should rise up to the occasion, but with you dictating the pace.

“Our concern is that such attempts at disintegration and undermining development and progress are parts of the challenges to be expected, we are worried that they are not being met or addressed with serious attention they deserve. For instance, we wonder if all these can be happening without the security agencies having inkling.”

Slams FG over Boko Haram

The group slammed the Federal government for allowing “the Boko Haram to take the initiative. Henceforth, we should not blow hot and cold and occasionally let out vital information of our strategy and the likes for them to work upon and forestall us.

They have so far been dictating the pace and taking the initiative thus beating the government to the game. Criminals are now having the upper hand as any success normally recorded encourages them to plan for and execute more dastardly action. No, All these have to stop.

“Terrorism is a statement that something is wrong and there is the need to quickly go down to its root cause, proffer some solutions and deal with the situation with a strong political will, irrespective of whose ox is gored. More than any other time, these events call for a national dialogue on how Nigeria should continue to exist. You just have to demonstrate political will for Nigeria to continue to exit. That was the mandate Nigerians gave you in April 2011 to do less will be a shame, ” the statement added.

Chief Rueben Fasoranti should shut up and stop trying to give the SW a bad name.
There is no other part of the South or Middle Belt that has any cultural grouping that keeps coming out with thinly veiled propaganda that supports the position of boko haram and its admirers. Afenifere is the only one.

It is a strange position to hold when boko haram is quite clearly a weapon against the whole of the South, which the SW is firmly located in.

GEJ lacks political? Only a fool would have failed to note this. Ages ago, with how "fresh air" totally avoids some of the socio-economic,electoral, administrative and political reforms that must be carried out in a holistic and heirarchically systematic manner. You can make all sort of plans to attract investment but we don't need Einstien to note that investment will never arrive amidst insecurity caused by the lack of political will to take tough decisions on behalf of the nation.

Afenifere is spot on here. Even now, it is appalling to see the priorities of Mr. President. State policing can help to impact on the fight against crime ,to include terrorism, massively. There is no better time ,for a savvy President with political will, to push this issue than now. Instead tenure elongation is the priority they are entirely focused on. The usual "fiddle while Rome burns" routine we see, year in year out, from leaders not ready to bravely do what is best for Nigeria.

Seems like some folks expect the West to just keep quiet because a southerner is ruling even when things are not going right. These people should just look back at OBJ days and compare. Even though OBJ is from the west, his critics are mostly from the west.

It is the way we are, we have seen better standard of governance and can not lower it now for primitive reasons. We have no patience with incompetence.

If GEJ could just step up and do his job, the west will sing his praises.

We are all aware that some northern elements are purposely unleashing terror in our polity for reasons they know better, mainly because they failed woefully to capture power. The general impression they want to create both locally and internationally is that GEJ's administration lacks the ability to secure the country and so he should resign in order for them or their accolades to come up to power.

Based on this backdrop, we should not be so hard on the president especially on the issue of Boko Haram. This is because many high ranking personalities of northern background are linked to the terror group with their calculated network with our security personnel. If power is suddenly returned to the north today, no one will hear of Boko Haram again.

Of course we all know that but this is why sensible and responsible leaders must be careful over the poisoned chalice they allow treacherous men like OBJ and Anenih talk them into accepting. OBJ, without a doubt , and more than GEJ, is responsible for this mess. They (OBJ, IBB, Atiku, Anenih et al) are all adherrents of "do or die" politics. Even amongst crook there is honour. OBJ got his 8 years for the SW yet went on to encourage GEJ to damn the consequences in running knowing fully well how their fellow Northern PDP bigshots , who they all took their oath with, will take this . It is well known that the North (i.e PDP , which is virtually every "born to rule" Northerner) ensured OBJ enjoyed 8 years so the favour will be returned through zoning.

If I had a kobo for every time Ciroma, Atiku, IBB et al literally frothed at the mouth calling GEJ "dishonourable" and "ungentlemanly" then I would be a billionaire. The passion with which those guys made the claim that GEJ had benefited from and acceded to zoning many times made any sensible person understand that trouble was brewing. Indeed one of my most frequent warning (and you can search the archives) before the election was that even if zoning in the PDP will go it should not be during the turn of the most clannish region in Nigeria. There are far too many extremists and mindless Almajiris in that region and neighbouring Countries, amenable to use as cannon fodders, for anyone not to have seen the writings on the wall. Yet GEJ pressed forward egged on by OBJ, Anenih and virtually all the never-do-well AGIPs in Nigeria !!! All of them had their eyes on sharing the loot that ensures 74% of our budget , hideously, goes towards their upkeep !!! Never mind the lucrative contracts they win yet are unable/unwilling to execute. Naturally, GEJ would not get any commonsense advice surrounded by such mindless Vultures. If you think back, you will note that all other Main Parties fielded Northern candidates. It was not a coincidence . It was a pragmatic acceptance of what Nigeria was ready/Not ready for.

In the end, there is no one to pity here but innocent Nigerians losing their lives because Boko Haram would ordinarily , like Maitasini in the past, be curtailed if virtually all the aggrieved "born to rule" have not decided to use the group as a vehicle of revenge against the "treachery" of GEJ, OBJ et al. This current post-Yusuf boko Haram is more political in my opinion. I will just implore their sponsors to urge them to refrain from targeting ordinary Nigerians. They did not cheat you out of power. Directly face those you feel did and stop shedding innocent Nigerian blood.

Gbawe has brilliantly captured the truth of the matter!

You are aware of a "deal! "You are party to the "deal"! You were even a signatory to it YET you blatantly disregard and oppose it yet believe that "prayer"& luck will see you out of it?

Pretty myopic, in my reasoning

Abeg Beaf, stop trying to make a tribal issue over this. What Afenifere is complaining about there is the incompetency of the government to tackle terrorism, which has being rearing its ugly face for the past 1 year. Let's call a spade a spade, your GEJ is in charge. Rather than trade blames on his behalf, you should encourage him to do better(dats if he knows how.)

Its just funny how these things only come from your ACN (who have serially painted themselves as traitors to the Southern / Middle Belt cause) and ethnic groupings like Afenifere. The only other area the sabotage and subversion comes from is the core-North. Its really strange how people spite themselves to get nowhere.

What the likes of Afenifere say makes little difference anyway. So, we de look una o!

I would think that people would know when to put their political and ethnic biases aside, so that we can tackle an issue that threatens us all. If you actually know something that the president is not doing to curb this boko-haram menace, please say it, or do humanity a favor and shut your face!!!!!!!!
