I got a job late last year in a Nigerian startup firm as a web designer on a 150k salary. We initially had a bit of back and forth cos the boss wanted me to work onsite but I insisted on working remotely because I couldn't afford relocation to Lagos at that time.

Over six months down the line and it has been a terrible experience. I've been paid just twice in 6 months, and we have not been working since the middle of last month due to a scarcity of funds. I wonder what would have been my fate if I had relocated to Lagos.

Some months we work for just two weeks or thereabout, I work beyond office hours and even during weekends. There was a period my boss would keep me awake at midnight working. I just had to comply since I haven't been able to get another job and the freelance market isn't smiling either. I'm constantly broke for someone that is supposed to be earning 150k, even though it's not much but it should be able to sustain a single guy.

I'm really confused at this point cos I feel very much unemployed. My boss would read my messages on WhatsApp and lock up. I've asked him to update me on what's going on because I feel jobless and left in the cold. He viewed the message without a reply. I don't know how to proceed from this point and would appreciate any advice now because I am slowly sliding into depression.

create a revenue avenue for the start up and earn from it. People just wait for salary without being creative as to what they can impact positively to the company. build 3 tastefully designed website for different sector monthly for the company to use their marketing department to market, if the website can gross 500k , i see no reason why you won't be paid. This is 2023 , you have to work to earn

Just shut the Bleep up. It's not his company and that's not his duty. I'm responding to you in this tone because the tone of your comment is complete bullshit

Is it that patronage is poor for the startup you are working for? Or there is patronage but your boss just refused to pay your salary as at when due?
his boss isn't a good one, from his account. Boss that often leaves chats with no response.
Unethical and quite toxic I must say.

I wonder if people like you know the power of LinkedIn, indeed, these two websites are amazing for job hunt, especially remote. Prepare your resume, apply for posted jobs, prepare for interviews and get hired if you eventually do well in interviews. My friend just got a remote job of $10/hr last week and I don’t think he’s good the way the op sound because I knew his strength. Don’t dull!

we both know the situation with most (tech) startups in Nigeria. Often toxic work environment/culture. Thanks to horrible bosses!

Need I remind you about the expose on...

There's a whole lot more evil going on in private and public organisations that is yet to be uncovered by media. So chill!

It's not just a Start up, a typical Nigerian owned business owner always feels he is winning when he cheats someone else.

The toxic behaviour in this country ehn, and the same wicked man would go to the church to donate 20 million to sow seed, while he owes his workers.

A typical Nigerian mentality is how to cheat his fellow human, I do advise people if you see a good woman. Hold her o! Marry her. The type of girls out there are hungry hoes, guys have chops their puna to nonsense. She would repackage the nonsense for you. On top your hard work to provide.

I hope you are already searching for a better job. If not, today is the best time to start, not tomorrow or after. A proper CV and start the search. Maybe things will improve at work, maybe not. And it works the same way everywhere else in the world. If you are appreciated at work, great, still try to improve yourself and secure your position even more. If not, improve yourself and look for a "new home". Loyalty works both ways. You have to be loyal to the employer, as long as the employer is loyal to you. If the employer disrespects you, you are under no moral obligation to stay one second longer than you feel to.

One last thing: Even if you decide to resign, do not just shut the door with your a$$. Be respectful and polite, but firm. You never know what tomorrow will bring.

I am still wondering what the question or big issue is here? If your job isn't paying u dump the job and look for something meaningful to do with your time there are 1001 other places to work and things to do abi them tie your umbilical cord there It's not your boss that's making u slide into depression it's YOU

Re: My Experience Working In A Nigerian Startup by Yusufisraelj(m): 1:16pm On May 26, 2023
I've been where you're at, the guard against financial stagnation is diversification my brother. I left a job in 2018 paying me 150K, I became jobless with an ambition to study space vehicles, I was pursuing contracts and doing that as well, I was also into farming. The contracts weren't coming also the farming wasn't producing as expected. At this point I leveraged relationships big time, I was literally feeding off my contacts until another door opened with better pay and payment for accommodation and allowances. I've equally moved away from this opportunity.

During those hard times I was feeding off friends (of what use is the contacts in your phone if they can't help? Also ensure you're someone who helps too, not necessarily same people, but kindness has a way of attracting help) and sharpening my skills and also moving around to make my services known to those who need it and can pay now not later; people cannot engage what they're not aware of.

Staying one place won't help you at all, you have passion in different areas aside web designing when money enters, feed those passion via knowledge and strive to be competent in it and seek investment opportunities thier in, well I'm quite an ambitious person so I don't mind hunger and big risk, know what works for you, if it's 8 to 5 or business. Then begin to look for opportunities that when it enters it can change your life. Provided you can match your competence to the price tag, else maintain what you can deliver on.

Forget about your boss he's trying to survive, you also do likewise, no one will come to your aid on this matter until you do something about it, don't complain, adjust and move on.

Why are you still with them? If the guy can't afford to pay you on time he should at least have the courtesy to let you know what's up ... not be dodging you. That should tell you a whole lot.

Come to the programming section you will learn alot.

150k per month for a tech startup.
How many man team are there? Abi ure just doing webmaster job... there are differences to these things.

If it's a startup, you're bound to be used, after you, dem go find another person wey go collect 100k.

That's why you see plenty apps either buggy or not functional.
Nigeri Tech Startups are something else bro. Dem no dey rate their employees... however, dem wan make the hight profit there is.

150k per month, e better make I no do anything. Well, that's why I no get job for now... because I get big eyes.

Yes! Wetin I sabi reach me to get big eyes. grin

Make hungry catch me well, i go see person wey go wan build website that'll take me 2weeks and cost 250k

And now imagine, na only 2 times dem don pay for the whole time wey u dey there...

Ideas are expensive. Both in time and monetary value.

What's your tech stack though and what was your job there basically. I wan check something. Why 150k

$200 a month. Ha!

In startups you don't work for Salary, you work for a share percentage of the Company, so you can put in your best and watch the company grow.
Startups usually don't make profit for like at least five years. Your boss is probably paying you the 150k from his pocket not business profit. There are many Challenges with starting a Business expecially in Nigeria. So what I would advice is ask your Boss to convert your Salary to a Share percentage of the Company.

I strongly disagree with you. First of all, If you don't have the budget to pay your staff for at least 3 years then what are you running a startup for? Even if you don't have the funds budgeted, then why not hire a freelancer and pay as you go? Second, you want him to ask for equity from someone who reads his messages and ignores. The young man needs to know that the company is even worth anything.

Not knowing that you should budget for salaries and other key expenses for up to 3 years or more, and not knowing when to assess the company's situation to determine whether hiring freelancers or interns would be the best course of action shows a very fundamental flaw in the way the company is managed. This makes me question whether the business is even worth a good valuation. Equity this, equity that...are you aware that 20% of zero is still zero?

Startups are terrible places for career progression in Nigeria. Early career, yes. But for progression is definitely a no-no. I got one sometimes after their rigorous interview of many long, gruelling hours, I spoke all the English in my mouth finish and almost gave a portion of my blood to show competence. At the end of the day, the dude was offering me a ridiculous salary...
You must know what's worth your time and what's not. My advise, since you've done beyond 6 months, you can up the duration of working dates on your CV. Up it to like 2 years. No one bothers to check these things. Improve the quality of your CV with power words. You will sure get a better offer elsewhere. Relocate if you can. Don't let anyone sell you cheap. Best wishes

Lol… 150k a month as a web designer? That literally is £159.23 pence… that is someone’s daily pay as a cleaner in the UK.

I don't think you are a Business Man, you are talking like a typical Nigeria worker or salary earner.

As an Entrepreneur most of us start with just idea with zero sum in the pocket...

Entrepreneurs are really crazy people... Na when I join nia I know... You say Budget salary for 3years. grin grin grin

Entrepreneurs are Risk Takers.
