Appoint seasoned administrator as Health Minister, NUAHP tells President-elect

The Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) has appealed to the president-elect, Sen. Bola Tinubu to appoint a seasoned administrator as the Minister of Health to revive the health sector.

Dr Chimela Ogbonna, the group’s National Chairman, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.

Ogbonna said that Nigeria needed ”to migrate from having clinicians as minister of health to having health professionals with expertise in health policy and management to redefine the country’s health system”.

“We have discovered that structurally the Federal Ministry of Health is in decay. The prowess of the people handling affairs at the ministry is questionable.

“The incoming administration, when appointing ministers, should not look at us who are healthcare professionals, let the incoming administration pick seasoned administrators to be Minister of Health.

“That was what President Olusegun Obasanjo did in 2004 to 2007 when he appointed Prof. Eyitayo Lambo, a seasoned health economist to handle the affairs of the health sector and he did marvellously well because he was not biased, he was an administrator per excellence.

“So, those of us who are clinicians or health professionals should go and face the clinics and manage our patients.

“We don’t have enough health professionals because many have left the country. Those of us remaining should go back to clinics and take charge,” he said.

Ogbonna, who is also the Vice-Chairman, Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), called for the involvement of major health stakeholders in government’s planning and policy formulation.

Prof Lambo Eyitayo truly tried

If he is truly qualified, Tinubu will get him to serve Nigeria either in that capacity or any other suitable capacity.

Tinubu did it, we are sure will do it again.

Same Cairo Ojuigbo who has been practicing politics since 2003 or so is not seasoned o . The Healthcare Professionals are asking for thoroughbred professional Administrators like Prof Lambo and not Politicians in white lab coats

All commissioners of health in lagos from 1999 have been medical doctors. Lagos health system is one of the best in the country. Tinubu would use lagos formula with some modifications at national level.

Former world bank president was a medical doctor. Former first bank Ceo was a veterinary doctor. Doctors run business as well. Would lawyers allow non-lawyer to head ministry of justice? Doctors are also politicians and administrators.
In US, Canada and UK, there is a position of chief medical officer/surgeon- general. In such countries, any politician can serve in health ministry. Position of CMO/ Surgeon-General is technical. Position of health minister is political.
I can bet it doctors would play major roles in Tinubu administration because he needs doctors to survive.

Managing a hospital is a university discipline in its own right but in Nigeria we always give this to doctors. Being a doctor is not enough. That doesn't mean doctors cannot manage but they should have management experience and education. Most of our health ministers have been academics.
We can judge their performance by the state of our system

So lawyers only learn court procedures but not Administration of public justice system.
