Abia State Government Suspends All Transportation Levies by SeanBeezy(m): 10:50am On May 31, 2023
GOVERNMENT SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT.

SUSPENSION OF ALL TRANSPORT LEVIES.

In line with the campaign promise of the Abia state governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR to sanitize methods of revenue collection in the state and stop all kinds of extortion, intimidation and harassement of motorists, the governor has directed the immediate suspension of all kinds of Transport Levies payable to Abia state government and imposed on Tricycles (Keke), Buses, Taxis and other commercial vehicles plying Abia roads.

This suspension takes immediate effect, and will remain until government reviews these levies and makes public its arrangements for the smooth, organized and transparent collection of such Transport Levies in a manner it would not lead to extortion, intimidation and violation of rights and privileges of Abia residents.

The government believes that the present method is archaic and very harmful to the lives of the people and the economic well-being of the state, and thus should not be allowed to continue.

In the light of the above decision, the governor has asked all those involved, directly and indirectly to please discontinue forthwith, or face the wrath of the law, as security agents have been briefed and directed to apprehend and bring to justice anyone found violating this directive.

Ferdinand Ekeoma
Special Adviser
(Media and Publicity) to the
Governor of Abia State
31-05-2023.

Nonstate actors are not stronger than the Nigerian government. If Soludo is struggling to deal with those thugs, it means he is only applying caution.

Taxing people is one major way government generates money. It didn't start today. Even our Lord Jesus Christ paid taxes in His time.

Otti probably wants to review the taxes or come up a different means of tax collection. The truth is that the people will gladly pay if they see their taxes being put into good use.

A whole lot of sense bro. I am simply saying that what he intends to do is not that simple citing the Onitsha case as an example. He needs to come all out for them to achieve his desires.

The impact wasn't really felt in Anambra State because of interest. Soludo inherited a government give n to him freely by Willie Obiano, obviously there would be alot of interests unlike in Abia where Otti single handedly dismantled the pdp structure. It would have been less effective if pdp had won Abia State.

One thing I know for a fact is that they won't back down without putting up a fight. I think the best way to tackle this agbero menace is to dialogue with the various town patriotic unions and their monarchs because they are the ones benefiting from it. If they can be convinced them to dismantle their own touts, then the rest can easily be handled.

Why not?
Touts in Abia have always received backing from the government overtime because of the fight-back they always get from residents. Now what do you think will happen if there's no government to back them this time?
These unions you talk about were still set up by the previous governments and definitely will not function in this new government. This is the first time we're seeing a different government in the state for over 24years, the touts themselves know their lives would be in danger if they go against this law.
