Cyber security is your best bet when it comes to choosing the best career path in technology.

When some people hear the word cyber security what comes into their mind is how to develop antivirus or firewall software and you must be a programmer before you can qualify for a job role in cyber security, but are these assumptions true? the answer is capital no. Cyber security is one of the easiest career to pursue in technology, you don't need a degree to work as a cyber security person, what you need is just the right skills, unlike other jobs in which without certificate you cannot work, no cyber security is not like that, infact despite no certificate is needed you cannot see a quack in cyber security that is working like in other sectors, it is self regulatory, your skills will speak for you, and you cannot be in cyber security and be poor.

ADVANTAGES OF CAREER IN CYBER SECURITY
1. Remote or physical job opportunities.
2. You can own your own business or be employed by organizations.
3. Start up your own business at a very small cost.
4. Earn big salaries.
5. Opportunity to work for multiple companies simultaneously.
6. Work with little or no knowledge of coding/programming.
7. You don't need a degree. Only your skill is needed.
8. You will be a respected hacker etc.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Cyber security have so many branches but I will give job description about two branches I love and I have also worked in for a long time. The two branches are (i)Bug bounty hunting, (ii)Cyber threat intelligence.

BUG BOUNTY HUNTING
This is the area of cyber security in which you work from anywhere in the world, and your job is to find how a computer, website, database, CCTV, iot etc, can be hacked or manipulated for fraud and you are paid immediately or in a few days, in this job the more bugs/vulnerabilities you submit the more your pay, the least bug/vulnerability is priced at $200. Your employment is 100 percent guaranteed.

CYBER THREAT INTELLIGENCE
In this area your job is to get intelligence on cyber criminals for the purpose of knowing there tools and attack methods. This is a very good career path, you can be an expert witness in a case, or you can be hired by an organization to investigate a cyber attack.

**Ayanbe Francis Uzezi is a cyber security expert.
you haven't mentioned anything technical about the field as an expert that you claimed. Apparently, for you to be grounded in cyber security, you need to have a foundation knowledge in computer security and networking. Cyber Security is multi-faceted with dynamic approach to the various areas of safety. For the emerging nature of the industry, it has been expanded to identity security, mobile phone security, application and software testing. The truth is that the field of career will always be applicable to any electronic gadgets or application that stores, saves and transmisits data and uses internet network. It is not enough to be an expert if you don't hve any of industry recongized certification like CompTIA or Security+ certification or any other certification from any reputable institution like Google or Cisco.

I run a weekly cyber security advisory post on my LinkedIn and I am currently writing a professional exam as regards that as a junior cyber security analyst, this isn't enough to call myself an EXPERT!

This your comment shows you don't know anything about cyber security, by the way do you have a degree in computer science? Let me tell you, don't comment on issues you don't know. Google the name Marcus Hutchins. This is a guru in cyber security without any form of certificate or degree, he is notable for stopping the global ransomware called WannaCry. And it will shock you to know that WannaCry was coded by Ramon Abbas aka Hushpuppi, always research before you comment. Finally I want you to know that the IBM X-force team are hackers without certificate or degree in computer science.

If I may tell you bro the real fraudsters and money laundering bro are Cyber security guys
Once you know about whitehat hacking

1.) To code a Malware as Wannacry, you have to understand the concepts of Ring3 or Ring0 rootkits
2.) To understand concepts of Ring 0 or Ring 3, you have to understand Reverse Engineering
3.) To understand Reverse engineering, you need to understand the concepts , analysis of executables (.exe or DLL) as those are the methods used in delivering Payload.
4.) To deliver Payload you have to understand DLL injection (CreateRemoteThread, or SetWindowsHookEx) or injecting your opcode into the executable in order for it to run
5.) To do step 4, you need to understand C / C++, NASM, or Object Pascal
6.) Understanding number 5, you need to have a Computer science degree (not compulsory, but very recommended) and get up todate courses about offensive security and a background to fit your purpose
7.) You have to understand a certain level of Cryptography

Let me stop here , The only place you can understand these , is to go college, Not Nigerian type of School, i dont know what they teach there, and Hush is a Scriptkiddie and no hacker, Nothing else!
some people believe hush is hacker cheesy grin ordinary fraudsters wey dey hire hacker to clone site for him to fraud

Being a red teamer is easy to get in to cyber security. But i can't say the same for blue teamer.
grin

I see those as basic terminologies.
Red Teamer , blue teamer, etc. Does not matter, Some people could know these things theoretically , the practical aspects become very bizzare.
An example is the person who created this topic here on nairaland. Obviously he has little knowledge of cybersecurity.
He may have knowledge of Phishing emails, but when it comes to using tools like SET, or Cobalt strike, or coding their own tools (Like remote administration tools (RAT)), i am in very serious doubts he knows these things, more surprisingly, Cobaltstrike was developed by the same Raphael Mudge, and other team members in the US, the same "RedTeam" you speak of.

Strong reason I say, i see those as terminologies.
Now Lets look at the meaning of Red teams, google has it to be

A group of people authorized and organized to emulate a potential adversary's attack or exploitation capabilities against an enterprise's security posture

You see what I mean?

I was surprised when I saw same. Some persons think they could just write and misled people.

1. You want to become a bug bounty hunter and don't know programming, I smile how to you want to debug and identify bugs in a code, except you are speaking of being an App Tester which is a Quality Assurance(QA) role.

2. You made declaration that Husspupi coded Wanna cry a ransomware. Oga, I please check your fact right before posting jargons.

3. You need a degree or at least training in cybersecurity field to be able to understand your path. While I agree you do not need to be an expert on the field of choice, that fundamental knowledge is key.

Like someone said, no company would trust you with their network cos one wrong move could bring the network down which could affect operation.

Abeg lets be guides about what we post out there as many persons just take some writeups and believe it's correct.

Even to be a programmer, you need to be trained amd must have done some projects to guarantee you know what you are doing.

Cybersecurity is not like moimoi that you just wake up and say you are a cybersecurity specialist, professional or expert.

Lets be guided abeg. Except you want to end up like UBER CISO.

20 bottles for you too. You've said it all. 👏

Firstly, Hutchins is an exception, he stopped a global cyber threat which is a feat not any random Joe can achieve and uhm, he completed community college which a form of a higher education.

"... WannaCry was coded by Hushpupi" kindly share your source.

Every member of the IBM Xforce have some form of academic degree. It's apparent that the one that's not up-to-date is you sir.

Lastly, Let me put it this way. I'm not saying you need a degree to be an expert. What I'm saying is, a degree is the bare minimum for any organization to even consider you for a role or trust you with their network. You guys need to stop selling this "you don't need a degree to enter this IT field"

I still stand on the fact the Cybersecurity is NOT an entry-level role. It'll take you years of experience to be an expert.

Baba keep quiet on issues like this .

My sister work in an IT firm in the UK and she said in the UK they don't care about your degree. Once you have those IT certification and you're good at it they will give you the job.

Nigerians with no degree are working with just the certification of their respective IT certification.

That is very correct from you my dear, they don't want to learn and they don't want others to learn too, all they want is to restrict everyone to a level of theirs so that they can brag that we are all in the same level. But the truth is the day you stop to learn is the day you begin to die!

I told you to do a special research on the real origin of WannaCry ransomware before making your next comment but you never did, now let me tell you that the USA department of justice indictment of North Korea Lazarus group is false and misleading, Hushpuppi lifted part of WannaCry ransomware code from an earlier leak of codes from the global spying program of the NSA, but the department of justice is saying the code originated from Lazarus group of North Korea, it just a mere diplomatic propaganda, but those of us in Cyber Security know the truth see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shadow_Brokers Meanwhile I want to tell you that in the field of technology connection is the key, and not unnecessary arguments, I extend my hand friendship to you.

Even to trust fellow citizens with their cyber defense is difficult for organizations in advanced countries, not to talk of remotely employing one so-called cybersecurity expert from a bokoharam country. I Laugh.
Dude Kindly stop quoting me. I think i am done with your packed up Wacky talks. I do not think i am needing them anymore.
I am getting a purge by things you say , and even worse, you never accept corrections.
You want to carry out a heist on an organization, and they have up to date security, and you think the use ready made tools which are known by Antiviruses , and have heuristic signatures known to companies like Avast , kaspersky, Panda and what have you, would make some very serious impact? Without being told, can't you see you Loosing it already? Is this how you go from reconnaissance to giving reports in order for them to patch their systems? Once you get employed by a company, they would need to hire another Cybersecurity engineer the same week to do your job for you. You are no hacker, not even a script kiddie, even worse, you don't know what you want , neither do you know what you doing!

You think, a heist is using tools like packet sniffers to steal password from local servers? Why then did people create the likes of Cain and Abel, Botnets etc? Why then is there a need for Exploits and co? You think they create exploits and pack them in Kali Linux for jokes? Those are practically exploits discovered by people like me and you and term them 0day! Now what do you know about 0day exploits? What have you done with these? Do you even know how to use Sockets? And yet, you want to plan a Major heist, and secure systems? Just like that? Something as basic as this, and you still have crude understanding, I wonder what in Gods name you want to do when you begin writing technical documentations for things like Man in the middle for BoringSSL , PR_Write And the very likes , or even API Hooking and doing things like writing API hooking Libraries and even Rootkits that Bootload with Computers or even Patchguard.

Kindly stop quoting me, I do not think I want to be rude, You not ready for this. Please work on your Cybersecurity skill. You are not ripe for this yet!
I am done schoolin you. You wonna Learn, you gotta pay!

Identity is the new perimeter! a good hacker must be very good at social engineering; noone wants to be probing networks these days, they want to authenticate into systems like a regular user, lurk and find way to escalate privilege to do their damage. This is why security operation centers work round the clock, this is why we have to tools like splunk that montor activities and detect unusual user behaviours, this is why we have zero trust technologies and DLPs. Invidiual hacking is tough to crack, hence the nation states!

Months of preparation will vary by your schedule, with about a years' experience in IT and Computer Networking, I committed my half of my NYSC year learning and got two job offers before I closed out my youth service back in 2018.

Some of the certifications cost between $100-200 i.e 70k upwards

Relevant certs: CompTIA Security+

1. Cybersecurity is NOT an entry level job. It is a specialised field which requires competence gained from a previous IT experience.
2. No certificate or training will make you a “Cybersecurity expert” which leads to my third point.
3. Anyone who brands themselves a “Cybersecurity expert” is a clown who shouldn't be taken seriously.
4. To land a role in Cybersecurity, pick an IT domain, work there for a bit to understand the basics of Operating Systems, Software and Hardware, Programming and Networking. Without these fundamentals, you're not ready to become a Cybersecurity professional.
5. It doesn't just end there with technical skills as you need to build soft skills in areas such as report writing, communication, patience, empathy, emotional intelligence etc. As you need to translate technical competence into business drivers which will be presented to C-Suite executives who drive your Cyber initiative.
