10th NASS: Hope Dims For Akpabio, As Over 70 Senators-elect Back Yari by nairavsdollars(f): 1:52pm On Jun 12, 2023
Ahead of tomorrow’s inauguration of the 10th National Assembly, there are strong indications that former Zamfara state governor, Abdul’Aziz Yari may emerge the next Senate President given the support he has received so far from the senators-elect.
Yari will slug it out with former governor of Akwa-Ibom state, Senator Godswill Akpabio who is the preferred candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking in a chat with our correspondent, a former Minister who is also a key part in the leadership tussle of the 10th NASS said over 70 senators-elect out of the 109 members have pledged their support for Yari based on certain factors.

He listed the factors as religion, the need for an independent judiociary, role of outgoing Senate President, Ahmad Lawan and the indifference of the president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Akpabio’s senate presidency ambition.

According to him “ APC has 59 senators-elect, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has 36. The Labour Party (LP) has 8. New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) both have 2 members each while the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Young Progressives Party (YPP) both have 1 member each”.

“From what is on ground, Yari is the man to beat. The number of votes required to win is 55, as we are speaking today, Yari has about 70 senators-elect with him. Many of the senators are backing Yari because of two main issues”.

“First, those backing him are angry because the presidency and APC leadership are bringing up religion. If you didn’t play up religion in your time during the presidential election and you said religion is not an issue, then it won’t be an issue now”.
“Two, many of the senators-elect want a truly independent legislature which they believe Akpabio cannot provide. They believe Yari has the experience and ability to hold the executive responsible if the need arises.
“For the House of Reps speakership, the APC succeeded in getting Betara to step down because of the influence of the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila who has been appointed as the Chief of Staff to the president. They were able to strike a deal with Betara which he agreed to. However in the Senate, the incumbent Senate President Ahmad Lawan is backing Yari and he has mobilised many of the senators-elect for him”.
“Also, you can’t underrate the North-West having given you that kind of vote in the presidential election. In fact, the entire North-West is unhappy with the president for not throwing his weight behind Yari”.

“The truth is that Akpabio is not really the candidate the president wanted. Some people, because of their selfish interests just went to sold his candidacy to him, saying because he (Akpabio) stepped down for him during the primaries. That is why the president didn’t really push on the issue of the Senate. Given the kind of political strategist he is and the powers he has now , if President Tinubu really wants Yari to step down, he knows what to do and those he can use to talk to him” the former Minister said.

Knowingly that The President is a Muslim
The Vice President a Muslim
Then The Senate President should be given to Southern Christian.

North with their issue with power they don't want it to go other region aside their own.
Talking about vote, North Central gave Tinubu 4 states out of 7 namely (Kogi, Kwara, Benue, Niger)
Tinubu won 2 states out of 7 States from North West, and now they want Everything, make thunder fire them.

I don't know why they're shouting about giving them more juicy position at the top, I think deputy speaker too is coming from North West.

Ahmed Lawal that is total failure still want to have some cabal at the Senate to frustrate Tinubu smooth administration but God will disappoint them(agent of darkness and backwardness)
They should go and sit down.........it's North Central that suppose to demand for more power not even them.
Let them give it to Godswill Akpabio ASAP............. Everything will be OK

But God will surely punish
Buhari
Emefiele
Sirika
El rufai
Mattawale
Yahaya Bello

For wasting our resouces and dragging this country back for 8 years..... It shall not be well with them all.

The North alone cannot have over 70 senators if this report is accurate. That would imply even some Southern senators are in support of Yari.

Tinubu's presidency has nothing to do with the legislature. We have 3 different arms of government.

You people don't understand how difficult lt was for APC members in SE to push through Tinubu's candidacy.

Just as it was difficult to sell Obi to core Muslim north. Am from Abia North and an APC card carrying member.

I believe Obi wave will go down next election if APC invest in SE. Next election APC may be winning states in SE.

Nobody should be crucified.

Don’t mind him! Bigotry and hate towards Igbo are the major reasons Tinubu minions don’t want a Igbo….ANY Igbo to be senate president! Ensuring the Igbo get no political position of relevance has been their sole reason for living since 2015 to date!

Nwanne, don't mind that fool. Their Bigotry is legendary

One funny thing is that you won't see them display their hate and bigotry against senator Yari who is also a front runner in this contest because they are always afraid to confront the Northerners

They shiver when the north sneeze

The Igbos are their easy target

If it is true that Tinubu really has no preferred candidate then he is no better than Buhari.
One of the early mistakes buhari exhibited was allowing the NASS to be hijacked.
If same happens, then APC rats should quit their unnecessary hyping and sycophantic displays
