He had no real control over the dollar to naira rate in reality. The pegging of exchange rate was a subsidy disguised with accounting and financial jargons. It is like blaming Kyari of NNPCL for subsidy removal instead of those who supervised a porous border and those he reports to. Emefiele's job was to ration scarce forex. He doesn't generate forex. NNPCL largely does.
The USD spiking from N200 to whatever was a function of demand and supply of forex. As the main source of forex, govt was selling fewer barrels of crude at lower price and that impacted the availability of forex at that time limiting forex emefiele had access to. In order to meet diverse needs of importers of various goods which include boxers(underwear), milk, toothpick and toothbrush. Tell me if in his shoes, will you deny an agriculture firm forex to import machine part and continue massive food production or send the forex to a toothpick importer too lazy to process chewing stick into toothpick locally? Emefiele rightly disowned such importers and condemned them to black market for forex while the forex govt(NNPCL) supply dwindled. Supply and Demand are tsunamis of economics that influence prices and they are not determined by one man who foolishly tried to become an overnight politician.
