The residents of the streets including Akinde Street, Isholik Street, Idowu Akinsanya Street and Mokin Street, said some of them had been displaced by the flood while many others still in their houses could no longer sleep during rainfall.

Residents of streets around the Iju rail station in the Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State have raised an alarm about the disastrous havoc flood is wreaking in their homes following the construction of the rail station.

The residents of the streets including Akinde Street, Isholik Street, Idowu Akinsanya Street and Mokin Street, said some of them had been displaced by the flood while many others still in their houses could no longer sleep during rainfall.

They said some residents had been washed away by floods over the years.

One of the residents, Kazeem Akinde, told SaharaReporters that though they used to experience flooding in the area, it became completely devastating and beyond their control since the railway station was constructed and the channels through which the water used to pass were blocked.

“We Have been witnessing the issue of this water over many years but due to the Iju Station railway construction, they have blocked some ways where water could flow well,” he said.
Akinde, who lamented that many houses and residential fences had fallen due to the flood, said they had made several complaints about their plight but neither the local nor state government had come to their rescue.

Also, another resident of the affected area who simply identified herself as Mrs Ugo, told SaharaReporters that she moved into the area in 2021 but between September 2022 and June 2023, she experienced an unquantifiable loss due to flood.

She said, “We moved into this area in 2021, just within two years, I’ve experienced this two times. Between September 2022 and June 2023, I lost so many things to the flood. It is a new building and the flood enters into our rooms and spoils electronics, kitchen wares, foodstuffs, and clothes. It is not a good experience at all. For days, the whole house was smelling. Please, I will really appreciate it if something can be done.”

Another resident, Mr Adeigbe, lamented, “We the residents of Akinde Street Off Balogun Road, Ishaga Lagos, are badly affected by flooding in our environment which has become regular with any small rain.

“Moreover, this is becoming uncontrollable despite our efforts to involve the railway cooperation while the construction was going on. The flood has caused so much damage beyond imagination.”

Also, Mr Shokunbi said, “The flood had spoiled all our belongings and rendered us homeless.”

The single raindrop never feels responsible for the flood. Floods are 'acts of God,' but flood losses are largely acts of man. We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear. Martin Luther King, Jr.
