I have seen a lot of funny comments o social media lately, especially with the millennials claiming that Dayo Israel invented Yoruba Ronu as a slang coined to incite hate against Igbos. I read the arguments by both sides and I could only imagine most these guys were born in the 90s and early 2000s. So where did Yoruba ronu originate from.

Please see link above and listen to the song. The song was originally performed at the height of the shenanigans' of the first republic. The Yoruba had an internal war between Awolowo and Akintola; and Awolowo was eventually jailed when Akintola aligned with Ahmadu Bello's group. Some of the lyrics paraphrased mean

This song was produced in 1964 and has since been a rallying cry for the Yoruba especially when confronted with very tricky situations, such as the one between Awolowo and Akintola or when folks like MKO were undermining Awolowo in 1979. It even came up during the June 12 struggle and some Yoruba impostors were supporting Abacha.

So when I see people claim Dayo Israel started Yoruba Ronu as a rallying point against Igbo; I just laugh. Dayo Israel was born in 1987, 23 years after the song was originally performed. The song has nothing to do with Igbos; it is just a phrase that means - think, Yoruba think.

Not one elected Igbo official .... not even one from Anambra state was supporting Peter Obi but your hatred for others would not let you understand that charity begins at home.

Same thing during the war. Nnamdi Azikiwe openly criticised the war and was the first to return to Nigeria in 1968. Lot's of Igbo solders including Emeka Nzeogwu, Ifeajuna and other criticised Ojukwu's war but it was Awolowo that was your problem.
