When I praise Yoruba culture, many think I am referring to just the Yoruba in Nigeria. Many Nigerians, and even the Yorubas in Nigeria, are unaware that there are millions of Yoruba people in Brazil who speak Yoruba, bear Yoruba names like Babatunde, eat Yoruba food, like acaraje (Acara je is the original name for acara and means you count, you buy and you eat), and dobale for their parents and elders. Yes, let that sink in.

The Yoruba spoken in Cuba is purer than the Yoruba spoken in Lagos. And they do Oríkì.

It was in Cuba that the Yoruba there taught me that Èṣù is not satan or the devil, as many of us in Nigeria have been misled to believe.

Enslaved people were taken from virtually every ethnicity in Southern Nigeria, but only the Yoruba kept their culture until this very day in the Americas. And not only did they keep their culture, they have expanded it. There are now an estimated 50 million people who identify as believers in the Santeria religion, which is a fusion of Yoruba Ifa worship and Catholicism, of which the dominant aspect of Ifa worship.

And the reason Yoruba culture has withstood the test of space and time, in my opinion, is because of the respect aspect of their culture. It has kept them the way the Sabbath has kept the Jews.

But Esu is not the devil na. Na laziness dey worry us in 9ja. Just because Esu can be cunning, tricky and can meddle doesn't make him the devil. Every deity has its attributes that makes it powerful. Those are Esu attributes.

Any Southern and Middle Belt adult who does not know the history of Ifa corpus or the equivalent in their own tribe, has missed out massively in education.
His education, even if up to PhD, is only kolo mental education.

Because virtually all Southern/Middle Belt tribes have their version of it.

For those who want to claim holier than the pope, do you have a friend, girlfriend, sister, niece or relative called Diana? Diana is Graeco-Roman goddess of hunting. I guess you won't see an African girl named after an African orisa of hunting. Ignorance.

You go to a hospital or pharmacy with a snake wrapped around a pole or cross as sign of healthcare? That is the symbol of Asclepius, the Greek goddess of medicine. If Dr Chuks/Osas/Bola/Ini/Aminu put sign of Osun, orisa of medicine, outside his hospital, dudu man will complain. Ignorance once again.

Because of this thread I will be changing my profile image to symbolise transformation. It has been a long time coming.
