…Wants Employers of Labour Relax Age Requirement Pre-condition

IF the resolution of the Senate is agreed with by the Executive arm of Government, there would abolition of age limit in job advertisements in the country, just as it has asked Employers of labour in Nigeria to relax age requirement as precondition for employment in Nigeria.

The Senate Wednesday resolved to abolish age limitations in job advertisements, just as it has asked the Federal Government to immediately draw up policies that relate to equality of opportunity and treatment in access to employment at all levels.

The Senate has urged the Federal Ministry of Labour , Employment and Productivity, other relevant agencies to restrict and discourage public and private employers from depriving millions of job seekers employment opportunities merely for not meeting age requirement.

Resolutions of the Senate yesterday were sequel to a motion titled “Age Requirement Precondition for Employment in Nigeria, Urgent Need for Intervention”

It was sponsored by Senator Abba Morom PDP, Benue South.

Presenting the motion, Senator Moro said that age limit or precondition for employment violates Chapter 4, section 42(2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), which guarantees every citizen the right to freedom from discrimination.

He also referred to the provision of the International Labour Organisation which defines employment discrimination in economic terms , as a violation of human rights that entails a waste of human talents with detrimental effects on productivity and economic growth, and generates socioeconomic inequalities that undermines social cohesion and solidarity and act as a brake on the reduction of poverty.

According to him, it was pathetic “that a graduate in Nigeria who could not get a job upon graduation and decided to back to school with the hope that a higher qualification, vis-a- vis a second or Masters Degree could give him a better employment opportunity is thrown into a career paradox when upon completion of his Masters Degree he comes out to find that he is now above the age of employment and therefore not employable by the sole reason of his age”.

The Senator stated further said that it is “ironical that a graduate in this country can serve in the National Youth Service Corps programme at age 30 but cannot be gainfully employed ,thereafter on the fact that he/ she is now above 30 years, a situation that is a flagrant breach of his fundamental rights.

“The circumstances described in the foregoing presents the predicament of the Nigerian youth who has the requisite qualification, knowledge, skills and is ready to work but disqualified or excluded on the sole and unjustifiable ground that he/ she is above the age limit by reason of his/ her birth”.

Moro argued that this sad situation has led many to commit age fraud by going all out to falsify their age to remain within the age limit of employability to the Nigerian Civil Service , and all other employers of labour in the country.

Good move.
Age discrimination is a no no.
Honestly, age discrimination does not favor the poor.

An example:
A teenager gains admission when he's 17 years old. He is meant to study a four year course but ASUU and internal strike prolongs the course to 6 years. He is 23 when he graduates. He goes for NYSC in a remote state where he will hardly have necessary infrastructure like electricity or internet to do personal study. Most likely, his PPA will be a public school where he'll be teaching Econs. Zero impact on his career. Dude finishes NYSC at the age of 24 years with zero advantage over his counterparts who attended private universities and graduated at age 19 and have gathered enough skills and knowledge relevant to their career and field of study.

Especially in the banking system ehn...some banks don't take in entrants more than 22 years old. Is that possible for a poor man in this current Nigeria?

Even if coys don't advertise age limit, they will still use it when sorting out prospective applicants. As long as thousands are applying for few jobs, all forms of discrimination will exist

Nice one, they should equally look at the 5 years experience requirements for government contracts.

This is a very existential, practical and pragmatic bill.

With the epileptic educational system in Nigeria, most people spend longer years than necessary trying to graduate from school only to be told they are now too old to be employed.

Meanwhile you were frustrated by WAEC. Some people write WAEC up to 4 times before they finally make it.

If WAEC doesn’t frustrate you, JAMB will show you shege. Some twice, others three or 4 times or more.

Then when you finally make it into the University, ASUU will tell you to hold their beer. They will make sure that a course that was originally supposed to run for 4 years stretches into 6 or 7 years; and a 7 years course running into 11 years.

Finally you graduate at 36.

Then you see graduate entry openings in Access, Zenith, GT banks. You try to apply only to find out that it’s not for those older than 27 years or sometimes as low as 25 years.

Every other openings follows same pattern.

You consider the military (armed forces) and they all have age cap of 30 years.

Then you exclaim, “School Na Scam!”

Because you are already seeing Chukwudi who failed WAEC with you and left to Onitsha to do boy boy. He was settled after 5 years while you were still struggling with JAMB.

By the time ASUU was done eating Okpa with your destiny he already built a house in the village and bought a small car.

Let’s not even talk about those who started yahoo after failing JAMB twice.

Those ones are now ballers with fake gold chains. But how would you know the gold chains are fake when you have never priced even a bronze chain before?

And now all you have left is big grammar. Big grammar that you come to Nairaland to type some days when nature allows you to afford data. Your life is rudderless and meaningless.

You question God, you question nature, you question everything. You cry inside and on your bed at night. “This must be village people”, you say. Then you visit prophets, alfas, even Astrologers.

You try to start shooting comedy skit but you weren’t funny.

Maybe you should learn Web Development or Data Analysis, but where you go see laptop.

At 33, 36, and above you still don’t know where your life is going.

But now there’s an Abba Moro to the rescue.

God bless you Abba Moro.

Let the 30s and above breef!

Waste of legislative time.
They will screen out those that are considered to be above the age limit at the interview stages.

We need proper orientation in the country

Good. It is nothing but ageism. Some folks have to work to pay themselves through school, which can lead to late graduation.

Good move....if a man in his early 90s can make himself a president of Nigeria every age limitations should be removed ...especially retirement age..since our politicians are never tired of remaining in government because of looting of public funds

Best thing so far, competent and requisite requirements should be the criteria and not age requirement.

Most of the private sectors are using this age limit stuff to pay graduate peanut in the name of graduate trainee because they know to hire competent hand will cost them.
