FLOOD ALERT: Heavy Rainfall Expected In Abuja On Sunday by vsamter(m): 11:05pm On Jul 22, 2023
Residents of the Federal Capital Territory and environs have been urged to be on alert as the city is expected to experience heavy rainfall on Sunday, 23rd of July.

The warning was contained in a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs, Ms Nkechi Isa, of the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency, FEMA.

According to the statement, the Director-General of the Agency, Dr Abbas Idriss, has ordered FEMA emergency response team on high alert to response to emergency situations.

His order is in response to a weather forecast by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET), which indicated that FCT and its neighbouring states would experience heavy to moderate rainfall on Sunday.

The rainfall NiMET warned could lead to possible flash floods, riverine flooding, strong winds, and soil erosion as well as thunder and lightning.

“The forecast also anticipates displacement of people due to floods, outbreak of water-borne diseases and damages to infrastructure,” he said.

The DG said that he had directed an update of the agency’s flood contingency plans to ensure maximum results.

He appealed to residents to heed to the early warning and avoid driving or wading into a pool of water during the rains.

He also said that all blocked drains should be cleared, and advised people who reside on water channels to relocate. In the event of any emergency residents are advised to to sail the 112 emergency toll-free number.
