vdestro: You missed the part "a voice came from heaven". Don't we pray and hear a voice from God? Note that the OP said face-to-face talk like friends, meaning the presence of God is physically with you in a certain form, here on earth - not over a distance. |

turmacs: Before Moses there was no Bible. In fact Moses did not know God until God introduced Himself to Moses in the fields using the instrumentality of a burning bush. All other instructions to Moses from then on was verbally and on a one on one basis. Moses heard from God and conveyed God's instructions and words to the children of Israel. Remember it was God who spoke the first Ten Commandments to Moses and carved it on tablets of stone. It was God's grace that covered Moses and that enabled him to have the privilege of hearing and seeing the back of God without dying. Today we have the Bible which is the written word of God. We have the Holy Spirit that lives in us as Christians and communicates to us as real as Moses heard from God. Some of us have trained ourselves to hear from God. Some have dreams, visions and some have prophetic gifts where they literally receive instructions from God. This is a dispensation of the outpouring of the Holy Ghost and the power of God is manifesting in the lives of His children. Even grace is freely offered to unbelievers because God in his mercy does not strike men down for disobedience and irreverence. So yeah. God still speaks. God still communicates to us. But most importantly the Word of God is a light unto our feets and lights up our paths. Everything we need in this life has been given to us. If you are expecting a one on one experience with God, develop a close relationship with Him and you can be engraced to experiencing that. But I can tell you that a Holy Spirit led praise and worship session with God and a Spiritual person is simply out of this world. You will hear, feel and know things that you had no business knowing if it was not God ministering to you. Even in business and life, God will give you the advantage. You will know per time what to do. Lots of times God has saved us from things that kill ordinary people. I could go on and on about what it means to have fellowship with God, but trust me it is the best thing you can do for yourself. |

There is something called Trinity in the Christiandom, that is God the father, God the son and God the holy spirit. During the time of Adam Abraham to Moses it is God the father that usually come down to visit, discuss with man. So after that dispensation it was God the son that came to visit, live and discuss with man, during the time of the disciples when he was going he promised to send God the holy spirit to us, so we are in the dispensation of the holy spirit. So God the father speaks to men through God the holy spirit which is in every born again Christian. As a genuine Christian God is in you and he speaks to you through the holy spirit inside of you. During the transfiguration of Jesus, He spoke with Moses and Elijah face-to-face, because they appeared beside Him. They spoke with Him quietly, not voices from heaven - that's how friends talk, "as man speaks to his friends" (intimately, as in Exodus 33 the OP quoted). |

turmacs: By asking means you seek the truth and it is the truth that will set you free Thus goes your answer: In those days God was looking for intermedia between himself and his people, remember he is a spirit hence he need someone to be the middle men because the people were suffering and God want to intervene but cannot manifest in the physical form hence he called Moses to lead his people. God refers to Moses has his friend because Moses himself was still afraid and didn't understand Gods way. Gods want Moses to trust him but still distancing himself as a spirit being. No man can see is face and live . (Please be aware that many of our misunderstanding come from the translation from Hebrew to English this as caused so many confusion and some verses make no sense but i can sense that your heart seek for your creator. You can get the original Hebrew translation and this will help you greatly without misreading the bible and there are many other chapter that are not in the original book like the Book of Mormon, The book of Enoch and so many others. Looking at God face doesn't mean that you will die physically but spiritually transcend as a heavenly being. Stay blessed. |

The just shall live by faith. The new creation is a faith being and we relate with God purely by faith. So, we don't have to see him physically to talk to him. Our Lord Jesus said that those who worship God must do so in spirit and in truth. The saints of old didn't have the Spirit of God residing in them. They were men of the senses. So, God has to occasionally appear to them or permit them to use a physical location or object when relating with them. But, it is no longer so. We relate with God by faith now.
