Maternal, It boils down to what happens mostly in Nigerian homes. Most mothers instigate some unseen and unrealistic reasons in the early years of their wards growing up why Paternal relations are people to detach from. Either for "winchi-winchi" reasons or something. I'm just trying to make up for those strained ties,

Maternal all the way for me too.

My paternal relatives are like ticks, you know that little blood sucking insect that latches on to a dog and feeds on the dog's blood until it's full and then it falls away?

I'm not insulting relatives on my paternal side just giving an honest description of what they are like, without malice.

Maternal,

My father's family is not very close knit and involved in each others life. In my mom's family, if something goes right or wrong then many family members know and involve themselves.

its all depends on your attachment with either parent. other factors also come to play e.g education, social status, religion, tribe, awareness, location etc
for me, despite growing with my mum, its my paternal relatives all the way. thats doesnt mean l dont love my maternal relatives. we just dont flow due to some significant differences.

a word of caution though. equal love should be directed towards both relatives. for most of u(or probably all of u) that chose your maternal relatives, am sure your choice is based on your mother's influence. in a nutshell, love is all that matters. true love gives and forgives. you can give without loving but you cant love without giving. giving is not about material things only but giving your time, energy and intellect. lets all grow in love

Amen to that (am being sarcastic here).

I don't intend to or plan on ever being a tick who wears out family members with never ending requests for one thing or the other, refuses to be self sufficient/self reliant and plainly makes herself a big nuisance and just sucks out the life from others.

Did you read the part about my description being an honest assessment of the kind of relatives I have on my paternal side? A description which by the way is not born out of malice that's just who they are.

Shaking my head at your response/prayer. You should read in-between the lines or better still seek to understand before rushing to respond. You didn't grow up in my world, you didn't have to deal with the relatives on my pa's side so please kindly hush it.
