This is a three-part series I first published on the fiftieth remembrance of the overthrow and death of General Aguiyi Ironsi, Nigeria’s first military head of state. On the fifty-seventh remembrance, I have decided to republish it with some updates and to add to our historical record as we grapple with the challenges of nation building in Nigeria.

Yes he deserves to die after the coup that brought him slaughtered a democratically elected president voted for by all Nigeria.

Same coup killed the premier of Western n Northern region but left that of Eastern region which is the tribe Ironsi came from.
Ay it never be well with Ironsi in hell where he rightly belong n is condemned to beyond eternity.

So how then do you reconcile the fact that your immediate past President, Muhammadu Buhari, was elected and re-elected President even though he was involved in a number of bloody coups including overthrowing the democratically elected regime of Shehu Shagari and brought Buhari to power?

Ironsi deserves to be killed but Buhari needs to be elected and re-elected President?

Comparing the coup of 15/1/1969 with that of 1983 shows that you’re mischievous.
Which coup recorded highest number of casualties and which region was left untouched in the coup of 15/1/1969

The first coup plotters in Nigerian history who were majorly Ironsi's kinsmen (Igbos) found it necessary to massacre all Nigerian leaders exempting their own leaders. Ironsi spared the life of the coup plotters.
Igbos celebrated. They mocked the northerners, despite the northerners losing a good amount of important men in a gruesome manner like the Sardauna of Sokoto Amhadu Bello.

Well that triggered a counter coup that got him executed, and the rest is history.

I understand what you mean. Buhari who was involved in three seperate coukd of 1966, 1975 and 1983, deserves to elected President. But Ironsi deserves death

The mentality of Nigerians is shocking grin grin grin

I am not surprised at your position at all, you are part of those that like to play the victim card all the time..... Ironsi benefited from a coup that killed many people and he didn't do anything to appease the regions where people were killed, but here you are blaming other for Ironsi's error.

I dont like hypocrisy. If you think that Ironsi deserves death for January 15 coup, then it means that Buhari deserves death for being involved in far more bloody coups in which he befitted, was rapidly promoted l, made minister of petroleum. The same Buhari then overthrew the democratically elected government of Shehu Shagari and became President

But despite all this, you Nigerians forgave Buhari and twice elected him President

So why does Ironsi deserve death and Buhari deserves Presidency? Or is it one rule for Igbo, and another for Hausa/Fulani?

No coup took place in 1969, but 1966. First one was 15/01/1966 second was 29/07/1966

And the bloodiest was the second coup.

He played with the tail of a tiger, and got mauled. His death was on him, and him alone. You don't expect the owner of a golden crown to watch idly as a thief steals it away; especially when the owner has a shotgun in his hands. Save your tears. Don't waste them on traitors and saboteurs.
