Thank You Jesus

After consulting with his young wife, Ibidapo, Oni, decided that though both he and his wife had done well for themselves in the mid fifties and were comfortable in the mid fifties and were comfortable in the eyes of society, there was need for him to quench his thirst for knowledge. His wife had to sell her house for him to attain this noble goal. She also collated funds from her thriving fashion designing business. So the ebullient Oni left the shores of the country for UK in search of the proverbial golden fleece. He was later joined in Britain by his wife and two little children, Olayinka and Akinyemi.

This is a compressed ancestry of one of the most extended Royal families in Nigeria- Samuel Oni Obasa and Victoria Ibidapo Worldwide with roots in Ondo/Ekiti-Benin Kingdom

This is the genealogy of Samuel Oni Obasa:

Pa Ajayi Obasa, the then Olodo-Oye of Ijero, begot Pa Amos Olofintoye, and had many sons and daughters.

Pa Amos Olofintoye Obasa begot Samuel Oni Obasa, his firstborn, and Rachel, with Madam Janet Ojisa Obasa (a.k.a Mama Onisu) from the Akata family.

Many sons and daughters were also born to Pa Amos Olofintoye.

Samuel Oni Obasa took as wife Victoria Ibidapo Kayode, whose father was Chief Fila-odun Kayode- a son to the late Iyasere (Prime Minister) of Benin Kingdom.

Now these are the names of those who were born to him by Victoria:

Yinka, Akin, Funmi, Yemi and Kunle.

And Samuel took more wives after he had come from overseas. Also more sons and daughters were born to Samuel.

Samuel lived 87 years old, and he passed on to be with the Lord.

The sons of Samuel are Tunde, Niyi, Samson.

The daughters of Samuel are Motunde, Omotunde (US), Peju.

Yinka took for himself, Wunmi as wife.
And Wunmi bore Dapo, Deolu and Damade.
And all the days of Yinka were 66 and he went to be with the Lord.

Praise GOD

The late Pa Samuel Oni Obasa, was born on the 22nd June 1925. His father was the late Pa Amos Olofintoye who was the son of the Late Ajayi Obasa, the then Olodo-Oye of Ijero-Ekiti. His mother was the late Madam Janet Ojisa Obasa (a.k.a Mama Onisu) from the illustrious Akara family of Ijero.

Samuel Oni Obasa was the first son in a polygamous setting and had several brothers and sisters with the late Madam Rachael Arinke Ayoola as his only sister from the same mother. The young Oni began his formal education at the Christ Church Primary School, Ijero Ekiti before proceeding to the famous Ilesha Grammar School for his secondary school education. While at Ilesha he lived with his uncle Pa Ogunleye Obasa (a.k.a Olomoyindoyindo) in communion with a lot of his kith and kin.

After his secondary education, the young Samuel Oni, took up an appointment with the Lagos City Council as a Sanitary Inspector. He attended the School of Hygiene Ibadan where he bagged the Associate Diploma of the Royal Society of Health. ARSH. Perhaps it was this experience as an health inspector that gave birth to his strict sense of cleanliness in his environment and obviously in the way he dressed. Oni Obasa was finicky, fastidious and passionate in his quest for decency. His dictum has always been "a healthy mind dwells in a healthy body"

In 1951, he got married to his heartthrob Victoria Ibitayo Kayode, whose ancestry is linked to the Benin kingdom. Her father was Chief Fila-Odun Kayode a son to the late Iyasere (Prime Minister) of Benin kingdom. He later worked in Badagry and gave birth to his first three children, the late Olayinka, Akinyemi and Funlayo before another boy, Olusegun was born but died in his infancy.

Samuel Oni Obasa attained his dream in record time and qualified as a lawyer at the prestigious Lincoln's Inn, England, in 1961 returned to Nigeria and was called to the Nigeria Bar and enrolled as a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court in 1962. By then Ibidapo had also obtained her diploma from the London School of Fashion. There and then he set up his chambers at 78, Denton St, Oyingbo, Lagos, alongside his friends and colleagues Olu Akinyede and Olajide Esan, who had qualified before him.

They were later joined by lawyer Duro Ajayi of present day Ile-je-meje local govt. It was during this period that he married, Esther Aduke. In 1967, after practising as Solicitor and advocate for five years. He joined the lower bench in the then Old Western Region and served in various capacities as President of Grade B and Grade A Customary Courts.
While in Ilaro, his jurisdiction covered, Ota, Owode, Ajilete, Oke-Odan, Aiyetoro up to Idi-Iroko all in present day Ogun state.

In 1972, he was transferred to Osogbo where his magisterial duties took him to Otan-Aiyegbaju, Ikirun, Inisha, Okiki, Ila-Orangun etc. The late Oni Obasa later worked in Ogbomosho, now In present day Oyo state. It was while in Ogbomosho that Ondo state was created in 1976 and Magistrate Oni Obasa was transferred to Ado Ekiti to begin yet another phase of his life. While in the newly created Ondo state, Oni Obasa worked in Ado Ekiti and later served as Chief Magistrate in Owo and Akure judicial divisions. He later rose to become, deputy-chief Registrar, at a time the late Hon. Justice R O Fawehinmi was Chief Registrar. After many years of meritorious service he became the Chief Registrar of the Ondo state judiciary and retired in 1984, when the late Dr. Olakunle Orojo was Chief Judge.

It must be placed on record, that due to his diligence, hard work, zeal, integrity, honesty and dedication to duty. The late Oni Obasa was recommended and nominated for appointment as a High Court Judge in 1983. In fact, his regalia, had been acquired for the commemoration of his elevation to the higher bench.....But alas, this was not to be!! Fate dealt a cruel blow to how hopes and aspirations as he was caught in the cross-fire of the Governorship tussle between Omoboriowo and Ajasin. As President of Ijero National Union his career was sacrificed on the altar of political victimization and unwarranted vendetta by unscrupulous hatchet men to boost their selfish ego and desires. He lost out not because he was found deficient in any area of qualification but due to the circumstance of his birth; sharing the same town with Chief Akin Omoboriowo. Even when suggestions and recommendations were being made for an appointment as a judge of the Federal High Court, late Oni Obasa turned down such offer.

On retirement, he dusted his wig and gown and reactivated his law chambers in Ijero Ekiti. Among these who worked closely with him was Barrister Tosin Oshundahunsi. The deceased also set up a parent medicine store in Igemo area of Ijero Ekiti. The late Pa Oni Obasa gave himself to the service of his community, spirit body and soul. For many years In the 1980's, the deceased was president Ijero National Union. He was also the 1st President of Rotary Club International, Ijero Ekiti chapter, an executive member of the Ondo state chapter of the Chambers of Commerce, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA). For a long stretch of time, the late Pa Samuel Oni Obasa was, President Agbe Afurugbin of the Christ Church Cathedral and until his death life patron of the society.

He was also a member of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) for over half a century and belonged to the Pioneer Group of Ekiti sons to qualify as a lawyer. Some of this distinguished group were Justice Adeoba (Iyin Ekiti), Lawyer Omotoso (Ipoti), Chief GBA Akinyede (Ode-Ekiti), late Olajide Esan (Ikoro-Ekiti), Lawyer Oluwole (Ikoro-Ekiti), Chief Olu Akinyede (Ado-Ekiti), Lawyer Jaiyeola (Ijero-Ekiti), Lawyer Ajibade (Ado Ekiti), Justice Jide Olatawura (Ikole). Until his death, he was a loving husband, a caring father and was concerned about the development of his hometown Ijero Ekiti, to whom he gave his all. By the time of his death on October 17th 2012, he was the Olori-ebi of the illustrious Obasa family of Ijero-Ekiti. He is survived by many children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins and feeling mass of relatives.

May his gentle soul Rest in Peace.
