Nigeria has significant coal reserves, estimated at several billion metric tons in Enugu, Kogi and other states. Utilizing these reserves could potentially contribute to energy security and reduce dependence on imported fuels. Through the following: 1. Energy diversification: Nigeria currently relies heavily on oil and gas for its energy needs. Diversifying the energy mix by including coal could reduce the country's vulnerability to price fluctuations in the global oil and gas markets. 2. Job creation and economic development: Developing a coal industry could create job opportunities, particularly in regions with coal deposits. This can have positive effects on local economies and contribute to poverty reduction. 3. Cost-effectiveness: Coal has historically been a relatively inexpensive source of energy. If coal reserves are readily available and infrastructure for mining and power generation is established, it may offer a cost-effective option to meet the country's energy demands. 4. Base-load power generation: Coal-fired power plants can provide a stable and consistent supply of electricity, as they can operate continuously and provide base-load power. This could help address Nigeria's current electricity generation challenges and support industrial growth. 1 Share
