I would like to seek further clarification on a specific aspect of your speech.
Recently, there was an investigation report by an ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives, which revealed that the Federal Government spent over N4.8 trillion as operating costs for three refineries, despite their low operational efficiency. Additionally, the government was at the same time spending trillions on fuel subsidy, raising questions about the need for an immediate probe and prosecution of those responsible for the fuel subsidy scandal, as well as the state of our refineries despite significant financial allocation.

I commend your objective criticism and this is what is needed to deepen our democracy rather than the hateful noise that is coming from certain quarters.

Your main point hinges on probing the oil subsidy thieves and corruption in turn around the maintenance of our refineries

While I agree with you that those that benefitted from the subsidy would be probed but I must confess to you that the outcome of the probe won't address the immediate problem the removal of the fuel subsidy has caused. Those crooks only exploited the loopholes in the subsidy program and it would be difficult for the court to extract tangible judgment that would bring back stolen monies.

We should first focus on strengthening the EFCC and the Judiciary as well as reviewing PIA if we want to get results. That would take time.

For your other point regarding reviving refineries or building new ones, that is a long time solution as building a refinery takes quite a long period. That is part of Tinubu's long time plan.

Presently, Nigerians need immediate palliative to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal

As a concerned citizen, I share the curiosity expressed by many regarding why there has not been a call for an immediate probe and prosecution of those involved in the fuel subsidy scandal, as well as those responsible for the deteriorating state of our refineries. The findings of the ad hoc committee shed light on a significant misuse of funds, and it is crucial that those responsible are held accountable for their actions. Such accountability will not only restore public trust but also serve as a deterrent against future misconduct.

Furthermore, I would like to express my curiosity regarding the allocation of funds in the tune of about N275b (Two Hundred and Seventy-Five Billion Naira) for supporting businesses in Nigeria and the palliative measures introduced to cushion the adverse effects of fuel subsidy removal. While I acknowledge the importance of providing short-term relief to struggling businesses, I wonder why the funds were not directed towards fixing at least one of the major refineries in our country. Investing in the refurbishment and modernization of our refineries would not only enhance our domestic fuel production capabilities but also reduce our dependence on fuel imports, thereby saving significant amounts of foreign exchange, create employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth.

Mr. President, I believe that addressing these concerns will demonstrate your unwavering commitment to upholding the principles of good governance, accountability, and economic development. By initiating a thorough investigation into the fuel subsidy scandal and taking decisive action against those responsible, you will send a strong message that corruption will not be tolerated in our nation. Additionally, prioritizing the refurbishment of our refineries will contribute to our long-term energy security and economic stability paving the way for a more prosperous and self-sufficient Nigeria.
