Is Nairaland Ready For A 'block' Feature? by LegallyBlunt: 10:31am On Aug 04, 2023
A Block feature is one that helps you control how you interact with other accounts on a platform. This feature helps people to restrict specific accounts from contacting them, seeing their posts, and following them. Platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook have this feature. Nairaland is a tad bit different, but is it ripe to introduce the Block feature here?

With blocked accounts or posters, you'll have the following benefits:
- They cannot follow you.

- They won't be able to see your threads and posts unless you mention them

- They cannot find your posts via the search feature.

Why is Blocking Necessary on Nairaland?
There are several significant reasons for this, including the following:

1. Increase in tribal spats, thanks to political and language differences. Divergent views regularly breakdown to real and offensive insults. The only thing preventing total chaos is that Nairaland is faceless (to a degree).

2. Religion. According to Marxists, "religion is the opium of the masses." There's mostly an obvious lack of spirituality when worshippers are ready to fight for their gods. Or as we say, "carry gods on their head."

3. Unwholesome content. Why can't I block users I'm not comfortable with? When they post lewd comments or are quick to incite people, I don't need to view their opinions.

4. Blocking gives you control over content you permit or otherwise.

Sometimes, blocking other accounts isn’t the right solution. But the action may be necessary, especially in these present times.

So, what do you think? Does Nairaland need a Blocking feature?

Ps: mods, if in wrong section, kindly move. Thanks.

The feature is unsuitable for Nairaland. Nairaland is a blog site, not like the social media platforms you mentioned. Nairaland does not allow anybody to send you a private message. What any account here can do is send you a mail. And your email address remains unknown to that account until you reply the mail. So, the feature you suggest has not relevance on Nairaland, based on Nairaland security architecture.

Yes. That's why I said it's a bit different. But I'm sure programmers can go around it.

It is possible. Nairaland programmers can implement it. But it is not necessary at all.

How crazy they are is none of your business as long as they cannot send DM to your account and cannot know your email address unless you reply their mails. Blocking will be necessary if an account can send you a DM or get your email address from your profile. Nothing necessitates blocking on a faceless platform like Nairaland.

It's not just about DM's

What are your other reasons?

coming across inciting posts one would ordinarily avoid, no matter how faceless the platform is.

What is required for this problem is the "Report" feature. Ask yourself why even the social media platforms you mentioned use the "Report" feature to tackle this same problem. And Nairaland has the report feature. Why do you now want Nairaland to use block feature in a different manner? Do those social media platforms you mentioned use block feature like that?

The block feature on those platforms only prevent people from sending you DMs or viewing your personal information. Those platforms, unlike Nairaland, may reveal your phone number and your email address. This is why blocking is necessary on those platforms. And the blocking does not work on a group forum like Facebook forum or WhatsApp group. Your interactions with people on Nairaland is like that of a group chat. Also, Nairaland does not reveal your phone number. You can even use a fake email address for your Nairaland account.

I may not reply to your further quotes. The point is your suggestion has no relevance. Your suggestion will be relevant if Nairaland introduces some new features.
