As a Christian, it is essential that we forgive people who has offended us, not actually because of the person, rather, because of our relationship with God because unforgiving spirit can keep us bondage.
In Matt. 18:21-22, Peter asked Jesus on times we should forgive people who sin against us, Jesus said 70×7. That's about 490 times which is unlikely for anyone to offend others that number of times.

Also in Matt. 6:12, is more of a cause to oneself if one does not do as said in the Lord's prayer (...forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespasses against us).
In other words, what it means is that, you're saying, God, do do not forgive me if I don't forgive others

Though, you may not necessarily go to everyone that has offended you to proclaim to them that you have forgiven them(I stand to be corrected).

For instance, if someone offended you and you haven't forgiven the person, eventually the person died, and it occurred to you that not forgiven the person could be a sin and a barrier between you and God.

Now, the question is, does forgiveness count when you decide to forgive someone who is no longer alive?

I think it counts.
Forgiveness frees your heart. If a dead person offended you so much that after his/her death, you didn't forgive and still carry a sort of anger for them in your heart, then it's wise to forgive (for your own benefit only).

But then, the person won't get any benefit from your forgiveness and I'm not sure God forgives tye dead while they're dead, but it's worth doing a research for...

it is your "giving " but unfortunately the person can not receive it. You have to die to give them but unfortunately for you, you cannot give when you are dead.

And the fact that you did not give them when they were alive to my mind would mean that your given should not count as you did not give it to them at the material time.

Thus, it would appear that it does not count, however, God is a better judge, i wonder if He'll agree with me. grin

Na yourself you dey do if you don't forgive a dead person.
Unforgiveness breeds bitterness in your heart.
&Bitterness is like taking poison & expecting another person to die.
