Popular Musician Tory Lanez, has received a 10-year prison sentence. He was sentenced for his involvement in the shooting of fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion, back in 2020.

Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was found guilty in December 2022 for three serious crimes linked to the shooting incident.

Megan Thee Stallion's foot was badly injured as a result of the shooting. This incident occurred in July 2020 while they were leaving a party at Kylie Jenner's house.

Initially, the prosecutors had asked for a 13-year prison term for the 30-year-old Canadian rapper. However, Lanez's defense team argued for probation and a residential drug treatment program.

They pointed out that Lanez had turned to alcohol as a way to cope with childhood trauma. Since his conviction in December, Lanez has been in county jail. Megan Thee Stallion testified in court on Monday, expressing the devastation caused by the shooting.

She shared that the incident had shattered her sense of peace, and though she was healing, she would never be the same again.

Lanez's lawyer, Jose Baez, stated after court that the rapper maintains his innocence. He added that Lanez's imprisonment would negatively affect the non-profit organizations and individuals he supports financially. Baez recommended a yearlong residential treatment program to address Lanez's alcohol abuse issues.

Lanez's father, Sonstar Peterson, emotionally spoke about his son's struggles, especially losing his mother at the age of 11. He explained that music became Lanez's way of coping with this loss. The news of the 10-year sentence quickly spread on Twitter, with the term '10 year' trending shortly after the verdict.

While many celebrated the verdict's conclusion, others online argued that Lanez had been unfairly treated by the justice system, using the hashtag #FreeToryLanez to express support for the Canadian-born musician.

During his court appearance, Lanez spoke for the first time, expressing care for Megan Thee Stallion.

He revealed that they had bonded over shared experiences of losing their mothers and had turned to alcohol as a way to cope together.

Outside the courtroom, Lanez's attorney expressed extreme disappointment with the sentence, comparing it to cases where defendants received shorter sentences despite causing deaths.
